just not liking it

topknocker

New member
iv'e had my v for about 3 months now and been using it constantly. i was use to a id machine but, i really never used the id part, only the tones. i love hunting by tones. the v has only one tone. never know what i got. i started digging just about everything at first. when i hit on a good target it honks loud. it doesn't air test any better than my low end detectors unless you supertune it and then it goes way out there. i tried hunting in supertune and it's just to must chatter it drives me nuts. i'm just not liking it at all and probably go back to my other detector and put the v in the closet. i hate buying a new detector and finding out you don't like it. it may not be the last time though, i guess it's just the way it is.

I got a Bounty Hunter Quick Draw II I'll trade you.

You can see what you got before you dig.

Great on coins. Depth gauge, un-like that old V.

How about it?

HH,

Oh no I just got a new Vaquero, but after testing it in my yard I think that I am going to like it. I like the simple beep & dig machines. After reading the reviews http://metaldetectorreviews.net/detectors/40-1-vaquero.html and reading other forum/forums members posts I think that I made a good decision getting the V. What are your other detectors that you call low end. In my opinion air tests don't mean much, what kind of depth did you get with the V in a real hunt. Thanks! Steve.

i was all set to buy a BH. the shop tried to sell me one. i went to this site for research, and the bounty hunter forum tried to convince me.....and did for a little. so i looked at the forum index, to see the most popular sites (most popular brands!!) and dicovered tesoro. i then asked some questions, and decided that the best entry level, decent, well priced, user friendly, detector, is the tesoro compadre. it is something i should have taken more of an interest in many years ago...

If you're interested in selling the Vaquero please send me a PM.

Thanks.

Hi
What coil are you using on your V?. I just bought a V and I like it very much and have the 5.75 concentric on it. You can thumb the disc and tell exactly what your digging. I've been using mine at the tot lots lately and I've noticed that it has it's own unique language. It's hard to go from a tone I.D. type machine to a single tone beep and dig. The V is a good machine and I don't care about air tests as I find them misleading. In tough ground conditions a manuel GB is a must and a preset GB is useless. I haven't had a chance yet to really test the depth capabilities of the Vaquero yet as I haven't spent much time with it at a tough site. That's 2 cent's worth.

When I got back into MDing with these new fangled machines, I first
got a BH. It was good, but I knew I was missing something. I got a
Garrett. It was nice. More powreful, but less stable. Then I got a Cibola.
I knew right away that I had found a MD that was just a dream to run.

I have purchased 5 more Tesoros, and the Compadre was the last one
I tried. I have not been able to put it down sense. It is made for me.
I love to use it in tot lots and trashy areas. I can't last long at a time,
but the Compadre can usually find something good for me.

HH,

I think the V will do you well, Ray. Your confidence is showing.
If you take that with you, and a fine MD like the V, you are bound
to succede, as long as you have a little fortitude. I do it and I ain't
got that much fortitude left.

HH,

Vaquero is a good detector. I'm still working the tot lots and still looking for the tot lot gold! Sometimes a beep and dig isn't for evryone and I can understand what topknocker is going through. It's tough to make the change from tone I.D. to beep and dig but once you do anything is possible!

don't get me wrong guys. i have nothing but respect for tesoro. i tried to like it but, tesoro is just not for me. i think tesoro is a very quality and high tech machine. i'm just a id and tone man. the v i have is a high tone one and i be glad to sell it for 300 bucks and i'll pay the shipping. just send me a cashiers check and i pack it up extremely well and send it, simple as that.

It takes me 6 mos to a year to learn a new machine. Be sure and GB correctly. I don't supertune. It makes shallow surface targets bang you head off. Set the disc to barely cut off nails. Look for smooth 2 was signals, not the real loud ones.Raise the coil to see if it dissapears close to the ground. Then dig. You can also thum the disc to see what target it is but the higher you go the less depth you have. It does real good around old house places. Good luck

Yeah, once you get bitten by the tone id bug the single tone machines just are not as enjoyable to use. Some folks will try and talk you into staying with it, but I say sell it now and get one you'll enjoy using more. There is nothing worse than putting time in with a machine you don't enjoy using no matter how good it is. Congratulations. You have now identified one of your have to have features for all future machine choices.

Tones Rule :rocks:

I think you have discovered what is important to you individually. And that is important for you. While I think Tone ID can be an aid, and yes I do use it on occasion, for me it corrupts the audio response at times and, for the most part, I no longer use it full time preferring to "hear" the cleaner audio nuances of a single tone. And, before anyone tries to refute this statement, I need to add that I have used just about all of the better units that have Tone ID. Also it is what I prefer personally, not what I expect everyone else to accept. The issue, if it can be defined as an issue, relates to what you prefer. I do agree with Mike that if Tone ID is your comfort zone then by all means that is what just might be best for you. I personally wouldn't put the V in the closet where it isn't really of any value. Maybe the Tesoro Golden would satisfy your needs, at least in part.

The V should be run with the sens as high as you can set it, yet having the machine run quiet. If you cranked it an it chattered, you had it set to high. And you are right, its impossible to hunt that way. Its also an advantage if you use high end head phones. The audio characteristics of Tesoro machines are there, they are just very subtle and you need good phones to hear what the machine is telling you. Learning a new machine is always awkward, especially if you make the jump you did, but you owe it to yourself to spend a little more time with this machine. Remember what it was like when you got your last new machine? Did you love it at first?

Hi Scully,

I agree that it takes some time to learn a machine, but learning and loving are two different animals. Guess which machine gets used the most, the one you know how to use or the one you love to use? If you don't love using the machine, then all you are doing is doing time and the hobby looses some of its attraction and fun. I say if you don't click with a machine in some form or fashion during the first 5 hunts with it, then you are wasting your time. Yes it takes longer than 5 hunts to learn one, but it doesn't take six months to love one, either.

My first major upgrade was to a Cortes. I used it for 4 or 5 months and learned it, found good stuff with it, loved the way it looked, but I really didn't like it. From the first hunt to the last hunt I really didn't like it. The I bought a Golden MicroMax as a backup and it was love at first hunt :inlove: Major difference. I hadn't learned the Golden yet but I already loved it. Guess which one of two got used the most. Yep, the Golden. Since then I've bought and tried two other Cortes machines. Guess what? I still love to look at them and I still know the machine but I still dislike using them.

Life's too short to do time with a machine you don't click with. Even shorter if your hunting time is limited. Its best to find that machine you love to use and the faster you find that out, the more you'll enjoy the hobby.

It's difficult to do good work using a tool you don't care for...

Is there a MD club in your area?

Well said Mike & I couldn't agree more. I am not a pro by any means but I have been detecting more than 20 years & I can tell in a hour or less if I am going to like or dislike a detector. If you start out disliking a detector right off the bat you are not going to learn to like it no matter how long you use it. I am a Tesoro fan & recently bought a DeLeon - I did not like it at all (too noisey/wouldn't lock on/etc.) I sent it back and traded it for a Vaquero. I know no matter how hard I wanted to like the DeLeon (and I did want to like it) I never would.

I was torn between the Golden uMax and the Vaquero, really wish I had the $$$ to get both but I don't. If I bought the Golden I probably would of said to myself - well if I bought the Vaquero...... and now that I have the Vaquero I will probably say to myself - well if I would of bought the Golden......

Haven't had a chance to try out the V yet due to winter up here in northern New York. But if the V doesn't work out for me I might try the Golden or go back to the faithful Silver uMax (a great machine). What ever model it might be it will be a Tesoro. Thanks! Steve.

I'm a Tesoro fan myself. Excellent machines and a fantastic coil selection. I'm eagerly awaiting their new TID unit to release. Maybe this will be the year. Who knows. Waiting to see. I've been working up to try a Lobo SuperTrac. I know it doesn't have my tone id per say, but I've been enjoying the single tone VCO audio Disc mode on my F75 and the Lobo uses that same audio mode in Disc. I'm supprised that I'm clicking with that type of audio for a hunt mode but I am. Just got a M6 to play with and if it doesn't work out then I'll probably have a go with the Lobo.

Like a few other replies, I too normally know if I'm going to like a machine or not, usually in the first hunt or after a few hunts.
I also have the F-75 and I want to like the machine, but I like the audio on the Tesoro's. I haven't used the F-75 much and need to swing it a few more times, but the time I have used it the audio was something I couldn't get into. Maybe I should have tried the single tone like you. I last used the 2F setting and was using the small coil.
Had a few problems and now found I had a faulty coil. Waiting for a new replacement coil now. I'm just not picking the audio language on the F-75.
But as far as Tesoro's, they usually seem to click or not click in just one or two hunts. Recently I been having thoughts too on the LST but that's about as far as it went.
I have used the M-6 a few times and found when pinpointing a tab, swinging the coil over the target, or actually the center of the coil passing next to a target a little off center, a tab gives good audio character. Rings in the same VDI range had a different audio character. It reminds me how a single tone Tesoro has audio character. To me, I find that as one of the strong points on the M-6, so some of these Tesoro machines kind of just clicked in a short period.

Tab-nabit, nice you are able to try out the different machines to see what may be best for your preferences!

I was thinking, that since most all MDs are micro-processor controlled, perhaps the manufacturers could give us 'open architecture', like the PC computers, where we can 'hotrod' them as desired, by swapping components...

Probably too much to ask for, but it's already dawned on me that capability exists in the machines loaded with tons of bells and whistles.
Even the mode switch, notch, and GB are great capabilities.

I've never been close to an F-75, DFX, or Explorer! Possibility of optimizing must be great fun!
