Just Like Starting Over!

Friday I picked up a like new Sovereign XS-Pro at an estate sale for a very reasonable price. For the past three days I've been testing it by going over some of my previously hunted sites and although I didn't find any super finds,I did manage a few that I would never have believed I could have missed.I regularly hunt with a Whites XL PRO with tone mod and once tried a DFX,but found it to be too much trouble to set up.I'm really impressed with the turn on and go that the sovereign incorporates.Since I am an avid relic hunter, the iron ignore is a true blessing and can't wait to hit the open feilds where I can dig everything that doesn't null.Everbody thinks the detector they own is the best(much like the car they drive) but if I was buying my first detector this would be the one that I would buy!DBULL

I owned a wites and it had terible depth when i got my GT i was hoping i could get the 6" dime but to my amazment i got it at 8" and the pinpont all metal can get a dime at 10" and you can hunt in it it almost ground balances itself the GT is a powerfull machine maybe not the best but it is really good I am cone tent with it

welcome to the Sovereign forum. Yep, go back and hit all your spots - best of luck and look forward to your posts - Jim

Depending on your dirt/sand sometimes less is more. Remembering that 17 freqs. tend to bounce off then penetrate under certain conditions. At settings of the lowest sensitivity dimes a 8 inches plus can be had! I have very little time with the GT but I use my sensitivity wisely .

Thanks for the replies and advice. The hardest part for me was slowing my swing speed(old habits die hard).Learning the Sovereign wiggle to pinpoint wasn't too bad.I've been running sensitivity in auto, disc mode,0 disc,0 notch. My GreyGhost Deepwoods have switches to make them compatable with Minelab detectors. It took two days for me to realize that I really needed to hipmount this unit.I took the pouch that came with my propointer, cut a hole in the bottom for the cable and ziptied it snug.Works great!DBULL

those switches on your deep woods are on the black widows I have also. I used to use the deep woods, toggles are inside the earcups is something I like, but the black widows block the sound better at the ocean and are louder which helps also. I just dont understand why that stereo/mono switch even has to be there, on some phones it doesnt matter(koss for example), so whats the point of even bothering with the extra toggles?

Also I would get out of the auto setting on sens and start at the lowest setting and work your way up as you are comfortable with.

i have a whites 5900 and a gt and i find these two machines are a great combo to own.....what i mean is there are fields where the gt works great and the 5900 struggles and visa versa some fields i get the 5900 working great and the gt struggles......guess it depends on soil ,minralizion and such... xlt and sov are a great combo....and like neil mentioned ,eventually you will want to take sensetivity out of auto.......i might suggest starting out with sensetivity at about 3 oclock and as you start hitting targats turn it up to the point that the target gives you the best sound.....eventually you will start noticing deeper targets......best of luck with it.....

Will lowering the sens make pinpointing more accurate?I also like my XL PRO for shallow jewelry hunting on my local drained freshwater beaches(vdi and pinpoint are dead on).Yesterday I thought that the sovereign had found me another cw belt plate(12" in the ground, felt ,looked oval) but it turned out to be a flattened heavy jar lid!DBULL

I have hunted with White's machines for 35 years, and if they got the depth of some Minelab models, they would be the "perfect" machines. The V3 just may be, but I like my Excal for depth. Never owned a Sovereign, but always wanted one.
