Just joined, just bought Tracker IV - advice? :ausflag:

ashhhhh

Hey all,

My names Ash and im from Australia.

Well after many years of wanting one I have bought my first detector.

I was initially going to get the Minelab Quattro but after reading reviews and looking at the price difference I went with the Tracker IV.
Chalk and cheese between those machines im sure but I think this beast will do what I want.
I'm chasing coins and relics, may try it out on the old goldfields at some point for a laugh.

Can anyone offer general advice on settings and usage of the Tracker?

Whats with the meter? The manual says nothing about it!

Thanks,
Ash

The meter is pretty much useless....To start, only turn the SENS up to about noon...keep your DISC all the way CCW...If your picking up a lot of iron and foil, turn the DISC to about 9 o'clock position...If the machine holds stable at these settings, you can turn the SENS up to about 3 o'clock, but if you get a LOT of chatter and no targets, turn it back to noon...
Welcome to the addiction and hope to see posts of your first finds soon...

Excellent advise GoGoGopher, the tracker iv is a very good machine. I put tape over the meter so I could concentrate on the tones. Found a lot of coins in yards and tot lots and a few relics on old farm sites. Headphones are a good accessory to use. They block out outside noises and help in pinpointing the targets. Search the old posts on this site for lots of good advice using your machine and good luck!

Yes!!!...Good stereo headphones are a must!!!...Without them, your burning your batteries faster (takes more juice to run the audio amp and speaker than the headphones) and your missing the true sounds of the tones which become somewhat distorted traveling through the air as they mix with ambient noises...I would recommend a dedicated pair just for detecting that have separate volume controls on each ear piece.
Also, you might want a set of good knee pads (I got some good huskies at Home Depot on sale for $10). A pinpointer probe might also be an option you may look into (many on the market), and a good digging tool or shovel (depending on where your digging)...
It can be a heavy hit to the wallet at first, but as you learn your machine, and find the good stuff, it pays for itself eventually.

Welcome Ash... This is a great site for info. The folk here are very helpful. Some are funny too. I'm new to the "sport" also. I have a relatively inexpensive unit and have a blast hunting. The more you're out, the more proficient you become.

Hey thanks everyone :clapping:

Ive tried your advice and seem to have it set pretty well, ive managed to discriminate out anything steel or iron while still detecting everything else. (tone mode)
It seems to be best to use "all metal" and then tone discriminate on any finds to narrow things down a bit.
Happy so far anyway, just gotta find some stuff now!

Just bought myself some nice headphones, they're bluetooth as well so there no cords...woohoo!

One question regrading pinpointing though.
In the manual it says that the machine will beep when the target passes under the CENTER of the coil, mine seems to beep at the edge of the coil.
Sometimes it seems to beep twice, once at the outer coil edge and then again as it passes the inner section.
Whats with that?

Thanks
Ash

Lots of posts about multiple beeps on coils now a days...wonder if First Texas released a batch of bad coils???

HH,

GoGoGopher

Iron will give two beeps. Nails give two beeps from end to end, and one beep sideways. Try a coin, if it still happens then use shorter swings.

Sensitivity can make a difference also. If sensitivity is high and target is shallow, you can get two beeps. Try turning it down over one that is giving two beeps.

Also, welcome to the hobby,
Rip

G'day Ash.
Good luck with the Tracker4. That's the detector that I cut my teeth on. Bought it from David Cooper in Brisbane.
I'm very rusty on using the Tracker as it's been several years since I owned it. If you are getting beeps under the out coil (transmit coil) as well as the inner coil (receive coil) then it's just telling you that the target is only a couple of inches away from the coil.
I'd strongly recommend that you play around with it on a metal free part of your lawn, using various targets, just to help you get a feel for it using targets you can see i.e. coins and common trash items. This will give you confidence. On the blurb on Davids site about the Tracker, he indicates that you can set the tone disc to give a broken signal on pull tabs. You may lose 10c pieces doing this, but it may save you digging a lot of pull tabs. If you are hunting ion a beach, then dig it all, as gold rings are in this range as well.

i just bought t a tracker IV on ebay in australia $!22 aus. supposed to be as new ...i already have a minelab soveriegn gt so when i pick up the tracker tomorrow i will see how my new $122 detector compares with my $770 ebay gt .......oh well if it turns out not that great the missus or kids can play with it :)

My son was using mine the other day, when he got a minor signal. I was standing next to him. I told him it was hit on one side of the coil and it was up to him if he wanted to dig, but if it was me, dig. It turned out to be 5 inches down. A THREE CENT NICKLE.

hey i tried my tracker 4 today and took my minelab gt alomg ,,,using both at the same time ..one in each hand ..................wow what an easy way to cover a beach better than buying a huge coil ..i was able to cover twice the area as long as i didnt get the coils too close to each other .

the tracker is so light and easy to use very easy ........only downside is that it makes much the same noise on anything while the gt (a more expensive machine ) can give different sounds and volumes according to the target .

i like the tracker for its light wieght and easier for pinpointing than the gt ( no need to change settings )

all in all a great value for money machine at its price

I have just purchased a tracker1V from David Cooper too. All the above info will be very helpfull I am sure. I have owned a MD about 35 years ago, it was a Dick Smith Special I think it was made by Texas Instruments and cost $49 in 1976. But had a lot of fun, and it would seem things have definately progressed with technology since then and a lot more fun is to be had.

Hey ashhhhh, Where did you purchase cordless headphones that are bluetooth also. I'm tired of my cord always getting in the way. I'm afraid I may pull the cord lose from mine. I tape mine up but it still gets in the way. Thanks
