Just imagine.....

Doing a search on the net I was able to get a number for the number of cities in the USA.
They said that the us census says there are 19,355.
I do all my hunting here in california in 2 small cities.
So imagine that everybody were to hunt 2 cities that would be 19,355/2 or 9677.5 .
Last month I had 714 pennies from the 2 cities I live in. I am not the only person that detects here so I have no idea what the actual count for the city is.
But Imagine if 1 person in each city were to do as well as I did.
714*9677.5= 6909735 pennies....
almost 7 million pennies 1 month could be found....
Could you imagine that is why the archeological community is fighting so hard to shut down metal detecting ?
Because every day we hunt we remove the assests they want to lay claim to ???
And thats just in pennies.
I put this in metal detecting because it is just about metal detecting pennies in the us...
But you may move it if you feel there is a better spot for it...

I've been fond of say that you could pay off the US national debt with all the coins currently in the ground.

It's been said that there's more coins in the ground than in circulation. Whether that is true, I don't know, but I've often wondered how that was determined. I certainly can't prove or disprove it. However, IMHO if you're not finding enough clad and other in your parks fairgrounds etc. to more than pay for your batteries, you're not trying very hard.

Yep, I think about it all the time..people sure drop a lot of stuff. I went to a soccer field this am, there were jackets, and shoes and full unopened bottles of water and all sorts of stuff laying around from a tournament this weekend. If a fellow was homeless and had a detector, at least he could survive a bit off of what others leave behind. Amazing the amount of little towns that have not seen a coil in a long time if at all...let alone all the river party spots from days gone by.

I doubt it..Billions are minted... Thousands are lost and thousands" buried/were buried"... but the over all total goes in favor of circulation I would think Sir..

Now I am not saying there isn't a lot lost/Buried. There is !!. Just makes better math sense to think more are floating around in circulation..

Elton, I think you're probably right. Even though I've read several different times in publications put out by treasure hunting writers that all those coins are supposedly in the ground, I don't see or know how that was determined, which leaves me skeptical. The scources were in the business so they did have an axe to grind. That said, I am generally surprised at the amount of coins I do find in parks, tot lots, etc.

actuallyi think the numbers are that there are far more coins lost than in cirulation.
Wether they are in the ground or in somebodies piggy bank. the country mints more because there are nit enough in the banks to supply the stores and bussiness to keep circulation going. There are some number of coins that the mit pulls from circulaton as they come in and do not meet with their standards. Likee the ones I roll and return to the banks marked as for deposit only.
AThen there are coins like todays pennies that I hve recovered at the beach and they are so badly worn that I suspcet there are ones that have totally corroded away.

That's another point that may very well be closer to the whole picture.
