...even if it aint a Garrett find!

Took the new Vaq out for a little woodchippin' today. I like to use this medium as a way to test out new detectors, since there are a lot of constants and the diggin is easier. I had no surprises to speak of in the operation dept - pure Tesoro.

I did find that the Vaq likes to softly signal on large, deep iron and soda cans. I mean I was diggin to China on some of this stuff! No different with others, I might add.

The Vaq has a quick response time and I found it quite easy to speed up if I chose, and not miss anything - this is in wood chips mind you, where most targets are above 5".

I would wish for an all metal mode with a slower retune - I like to hover a bit as I PP. In order to deal with that, I just use the old negative, or null, AM pinpoint. It's my only gripe and it aint much, as the Vaq pinpoints quite well in DISC without switching to all metal. The Vaq became my go-everywhere detector, today - that is until I get a 250. It will be interesting to compare the two.

All told I found $3.01 in change, the usual trash suspects, some TEEEEENY rivets and a fired .38 cal bullet. Also uncovered was an itsy-bitsy little charm in the shape of an "S" and some FALSE TEETH.

They're in the bottom left of the photo and are the 4 front teeth, all gold on the rear. As dental gold is normally 18K, it's a tidy little find. They were fairly deep about 4", so are well aged. Somewhere in the past was a person unable to eat apples!!

>>> when I showed her. I had called ahead and said, "Hey Hon. Gues what? I found some GOLD today. I'll bring it when I come for lunch, OKk?" She had to work that day and we had a "date" to dine together at noon.

"Cool! I can't wait," was her reply. Im sure she thought it was another ring or charm or some such as that. The girl looks like a gypsy, adorned with all the goodies I've found...

So when I got there, I had the teeth all cleaned up and gave them to her, gold side up. Her eyes lit up at the yellow shine, then she got a puzzled look on her face. She glanced at me and then turned them over.

As realization dawned on her, she shriekd aloud, "EEEEWWWWW! GROSS! Are these what I think they are? Where did you find them..."

"Well", I said matter-of-factly, "you know that park over next to the old train station site, the one with the..."

"Oh, I don't care! Here take them. That's disgusting!"
She sort of tossed them back to me as she began to wave her hands around in front of her. I quickly caught them in mid air.

All this commotion brought one of her employees over, who, upon seeing "The Choppers" howled in a tirade of disgust all her own...
"OH, MY GAAAWWWD! Where did you get those? Whose were they? Please tell me you're not going to KEEP them... are you?"

"Well, actually," I said calmly, "I was thinking of having Swint (my friend, the jeweler) figure out a way to make a necklace of them. Neat, huh?" I held them up, a little closer to the girls, admiring them in all their glory.

They both shoved my hand away as I held The Choppers nearer for their inspection, and took a step back.
"EEEEEWWWWW, now that's the end. Put those horrid things away and let's go to lunch," said Lori, in her best Connecticut Yankee accent -which only comes out when she really gets going.

she grabbed her coat, and as we left the store, she pleaded with me, "Next time, honey, please find a nice ring or a necklace, like usual. TEETH, for cripes sake...Sheesh!"

All I could say in reply was, "You got a deal, babe. What size you want?"

Turn it into a nice piece of jewelry for her, maybe with a diamond or two, but never, NEVER tell where the gold came from. ;)

From the land of the Bluenose....good tale and photo. Nice to see folks still getting out this time of year. Glad too....thatthe rest of the "person" was not there as I hear Hoffa is still missing! best of the season!

Thanks Les. I get out about all year, as it's South Carolina. I do taper off a little in winter and the heat of the summer, but never really quit.
On some morbid level, I sorta wish I could have found the rest of "Toothless Man". I dunno, call me wierd. I looked...

I hadnt considered turning them into something else, Ian, although the idea has merit. IMHO, they are such a unique find, they should stand alone, as is. I ll probably leave them alone. THe surprise value is worth it...
