Just got the Excal back and-

Sand Scoop

New member
I just got the Ol Excal back from being repaired.I noticed the threshold turned harder than when I sent it to be repaired.First day out it worked like when it was new no problems threshold held steady..Second day I was having a little problem keeping the threshold steady,it would get louder as I hunted.I thought that maybe they had replaced the "O" ring in the switch or tightened it and it would loosen in time.Today I walk out on the beach, turn it on and the threshold went as loud as it can go with NO adjustment.Seems like I read another guy had the same thing happen when he got his back from Minelab. If that person is out here and you read this what did they find? I'm sure its going back in.Hope it doesn't take another 2 months before I see it again........

Sand Scoop - Is it still taking Minelab two months to return a unit from repair? I was under the impression that they had addressed that issue.

Ya I am thinking battery at this point.
I may be the guy that posted the same issues? Never found out what they found as they replace the unit. I had many other issues then just the threshold, But I never knew it for a year till I got a new unit and found mine wasn't right from the box! If you see another exxla user stop and compare it was an eye opener for me.

Just got my excal II a month ago. I notice that as the thresh hold changes...sometimes it goes up an down. I was thinking this was normal or automatic GB at work. The machine appears to be working fine to me. Sometimes it changes when I swing over a large metal object and it overloads the coil.

Any thoughts on this? I am not digging the idea of having to mail it to them an wait 2 months for them to tell me theres a problem or that there is nothing wrong. Thanks HH -Joe

I wonder if this is just normal as with the Sovereigns and the Excaliburs they hold the tone of the last target it sees. With most they have some hearing loss where some tones they hear more than others, so they will sound louder. For me the low tones of iron sound louder threshold than that of a good coin threshold.

Sand Scoops problem sounds like a low battery alert as the threshold toward last will go loud and you can not turn it down, it will act up a bit first to let you know the battery is low, then go to a loud threshold you can not adjust.

about 6-7 weeks I got ahold of them and they got on it.I got it back around a 1 1/2 weeks later. Worked like new first time out then all down hill. The reason it went in was a coil change.Never had any other problem. The battery thats in it is one of the newer ones thats been in for around a year so it shouldn't be that.I think it has something to do with the threshold switch..I'll give them a call tomorrow and it'll probably be going back.

I would send it back. I think what I described is the auto gb at work along with the way the machine was designed to work. Sounds like you have a problem. I will say this. I hate...no abhor...batteries. They are costly, and despite what you do they all eventually fail. Being about a year old, yours may have indeed failed. If you know a friend with same machine, try their battery maybe thats just it.

If you gotta send it out, id ask for them to look at yours first, because it just came back. Keep us updated. HH an hope your machine is ok. -Joe

What was described sound like a low battery alert so I would either put in the alkaline pack with good alkaline if you have one, or borrow if possible a differnt battery pack to try it also to be sure before you send it in to be told a month later the battery was low. It is worth a try and save you some time possibly and down time if it is something simple.

got my excal2 back last week YES it does take 2 month

Got ahold of Minelab and talked to John.Explained what was going on and he said it was probably in the circuit board.Minelab sent me a return postage label and its heading back tomorrow. Thanks to everyone's reply.

Japanese scientists have created a camera with such a fast shutter speed they now can
photograph a woman with her mouth shut.

:clapping:

That was a good one..Buried Crap :) yes, maybe low batt? I use a multimeter.. This shit scarger Minelab deliver to the Excal ? Thinking abaut getting one of those I have seen here on

These reliability issues with the Excal and the slug slow turn around time are getting outrageous.

One thing to point out...the way the Excal and Sovereign eliminate the ground signal is very different from automatic ground tracking that other VLF machines use. It's not so much tracking but a unique way to ignore the ground signal.

5 - 7 days would be great. I'd be curious to see if it actually happens. Good luck and keep us posted.
