Just got the CTX 3030 and my question is which coil should I start with

I just received my CTX today. I was fortunate enough to get the 17" coil with it. My question to all of you experienced CTX users is which coil should I set up to use on the machine my first time out? I am going to primarily be beach and shallow water hunting in South Florida. Your input is greatly appreciated. I cannot wait to hit the beach!

I honestly don't think it will matter that much what you start off with. If, in the long run you plan on using it more than the stock coil I would say just get used to it then. I am not sure what kind of drag that big coil may experience in the water though....

I have been using the 17 incher exclusively since I purchased it for about (FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS you lucky guy!) mid last year

GKMan, thanks for the input. I have to be honest when I opened the box and saw the size of the 17 it scared and excited me! The drag issue is something I am concerned about. This will be my first real shallow water hunting. In the past I would go up to my shines with my e-trac and hope I did not drop it in the water or get hit by a wave.

There are some heavy duty beach hunters on here that will probably be able to offer more as far as the drag goes, but I suppose it should only take a couple minutes to find out how bad it is.

Congrats on the CTX! Start with the 11" especially in the water. I only use the 17" with a harness and on wet sand. I've hit coins at 14+ inches with the 11" coil so depth isn't an issue as much as coverage compared to 17" coil. Pitch Hold response can alert you to targets deeper than you will get a target signal. Good luck and HH!

Fletch88 thanks for the advice!! I cannot wait to try it out, the weekend will not come soon enough!!

I think the stock coil is alot more fun to use and learn, save the 17 for later. after using the 11 for over a year, now I am using mostly the 17

To say the least both coils are great. I know some folks have problems swinging the larger coil for an extended period of time. Somehow, for me I am able to do it all day long sans harness and the shaft fully extended without an issue. I am not a big guy at all so I am not sure how I can pull this off, considering it does look and physically feels heavier than the stock coil. That coupled with the drag that I encounter in the grass by a coil is considerable but still it just doesn't seem to bother me. I think it is probably not a bad idea to use a harness of some sort to cut down on should wear, but I just hate that tethered feeling.

I am not exactly sure what Bill meant by the stock coil being more fun. I would guess he is talking about being in a trashier area that makes it slightly more difficult to pinpoint?

Fletch are saying that the seventeen incher is less stable in the wet sand? I don't recall folks mentioning that before, but I may have missed it.

I personally am not a beach hunter but do like to hear about what people are experiencing.

I can't speak o the drag issue as I haven't gotten to use my CTX in the water yet but I can say that since I bought my 17" I use it at least as much as my 11". I believe I pinpoint a little better with the 17".

When I first got my big coil I had my wife take a snapshot of me holding my detector - 17 incher attached and with coil held at about head height. I texted it to my buddies and most made comments on the size of that big coil next to my head. I didn't tell them until later that I had Photoshopped the coil to make it look about a third larger than i'st already huge size!

That's funny! I looked at the right picture before I read the post and I thought this guy has a really small head!

Good job on the Photoshop,!
