Ron, !!!....Six pack cold and ready to read any field reports from you in opinions on this coil. Can't wait, make it long and overly detailed so it's right up my alley.
By the way, the SEF's coil covers are even a bit heavier than that on other coils. By ditching it and using spray on bed liner, once you know it's not a dud from the factory, you'll be surprised how light it feels, even though it's not very heavy in it's size class with a coil cover on it either. Refer to the coil weight chart thread linked in I think the 1st or 2nd page of the coil thread sticky for precise weight, but it's a good bit lighter than the 10" Tornado even.
Never feel fatigued with this coil even after a long 7 or so hour hunt, and even when using it in the woods for hours. At first it'll feel like a somewhat bigger coil then stock, but after some use if you go back to the 10" Tornado you'll feel like you are using an 8" coil in some respects, and wonder how you ever covered any kind of ground with such a "tiny" feeling coil.
And I promise you, as good as the 10" Tornado is in left/right separation, you'll probably find the 12x10 is much better even, unless as said you got a dud here or something, which I have hardly ever heard of SEF duds on the BBS or FBS versions of these coils. In a low EMI environment where full sensitivity is stable, an air test should show about 11.5" in depth on a clad dime with the 12x10, as my youtube pictorials show. We all know though that these BBS units can get more depth in some soils/sands than an air test shows. Seen that myself with certain coils.
The SEFs, referring to that coil weight chart thread, appear to weigh much more on the FBS machines for some odd reason. If you look in that coil weight chart thread, you'll find the 12x10 BBS version without a coil cover is pretty darn near the weight of the legendary light weight reputation of the 11" Pro Coil, and if memory serves from that thread it's about a half ounce lighter than the S-12 without a coil cover as well, and we all know the S-12 has a long standing reputation for being very light for it's size.
Man Ron, this is like seeing Elvis meet the Beetles in a way here.
Meaning seeing you finally "meet" the 12x10 and being a fly on the wall in that respect as to how it plays out. I'm really looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this coil. Give it time, as it requires a little re-adjustment in some things, such as sound scaling to depth, and also the Sovereign Wiggle to work up very deep targets in term of timing. Not harder in either respect. Easier in fact IMO, but just the same they require a little of re-"timing" or re-"scaling" in your head and rhythm to get in "tune" with it.
You, like many of us, might be sad to see the GT be discontinued. But I'll say this...If this coil gives your Sovereign the improvements I've seen in virtually every respect with my GT using it, then you're going to think you've just been handed the new Sovereign GT Advanced by Minelab. And that's not to say the GT with the stock 10" Tornado is any slouch either. I'd put that combo up against any machine I've owned or gone head to head against, but just the same the 12x10 makes it even more special IMO...Pushed to the very last little edge of limits in what VLF technology in modern day detectors has to offer, at least in my soils and sands here...
Reminder- Check that coil cable nut. It's probably loser than 20 year old shocks on a 30 year old car...
