Well after many nights of detecting and theorizing in my head while sleeping, I went for a Sovereign GT. As an Excalibur user I wanted my ultimate beach machine. I gave thought on/to all detectors, including pulse units. I even purchased a used dual frequency and splash-proof Fisher CZ6a and older Sovereign XS! I almost decided pulse was they way to go, but then read how deep Sovereigns go with 15 inch WOT coil at the beach... some stated even deeper than your typical pulse!
Well that sold me and I got a great deal on a used GT on ebay! I really like the straight shaft and hip mount pouch. Not sure if I'll use the meter at the beach though? But I also have a herd of Sun Ray coils on order! For the GT a Sun Ray S-5, S-8 and S-12 is on the way. Plus I ordered an extra S-8 and S-12 which I will have Minelab hardwire to my Excaliburs 800 and 1000. My research determined that the Sun Ray S-8 coil is better than my BBS 800 and the S-12 will cover a bit more ground than the BBS 1000. I hope the coil swaps turn out to be as good as I expect. I once had an Excalibur/WOT combo, but sold it because it was difficult to swing in the water. I am hoping the S-12 will work better.
I also intend to purchase a WOT for the GT. Then I'll give the GT a good workout/test at the beach. I kind of like the idea that my water machines and now my beach machine are from the same family and should all be familiar, switching from one to the other. I'm also curious how well the GT does on gold nuggets. It would be fun to take it prospecting a couple times a year. I am surprised just how hot the CZ6a is on small nuggets in hot ground! I might even sell my MXT!? I think by sticking with just BBS machines I will learn them well for treasure hunting. If the GT does not work like I think on the beach, then I'll revert to plan #2- a GP gold machine for at the beach. OK, so I know there is little discrimination with a GP, but I bet it would go deep on small gold with diamonds!
