Just got my Golden uMax - Didn't know what I was missing!

Mike,
Search this forum for posts by Mike Hillis about the Golden. He talks at length in some of his posts about setting it up and using it to scout areas.

Your going to have some pure fun now!.And think of the coils you got now to test out!.Please silver this is important,if you make a video.Do this for me please.I would like it shown how the golden kicks in overdrive in wide notch!.I am telling you this thing was built to run in wide notch mode. You got a box full of secrets with this one,i can see it now, when you start unlocking that box.I am glad we got you silver mike.CW

Thanks CW. I like what I see so far but I'll need to spend some time with her to, as you put it, unlock that box of secrets. Should be fun! Not familiar with the Wide Notch = Overdrive yet, but I'm sure I see it. Thanks again.

Excellent, will do! Thanks tvr

Congrats Mike, I think the Golden umax is a awesome machine in the hands of an experienced detectorist, it's like shooting fish in a barrel ! HH tigerhank68

Good luck with it Mike, I'm sure you'll love it. I dont take mine out as often as I could, but then I dont get out as often as I'd like:lol: The Golden is a beautiful little detector, and as CW(SC) intimated, with wide and narrow notch features, the options for the user are almost endless, almost. When you are in notch mode turn the Adjustable Notch fully counterclock wise then turn it fully clock wise and test with a broken off tab tail. CCW should reject it easier.

If you just use the tones without the notch feature at minimum discrimination, you'll get amazingly good depth from the Golden. If you get tired of digging zinc pennies and pull tabs use the notch feature. If the notch feature is setup correctly you'll find plenty of coins and silver jewelry and still have a good shot at some gold jewelry without digging a lot of trash. I have the old tone version and setting it up is different from the new tone version. Mike Hillis can fill you in on the new tone one. He has written some really good stuff about the Golden.

Good luck with your new Tesoro Golden uMax.

It's a very cool detector. I found if I set the notch width to either wide or narrow, and the width dialed to about 9:30, where a nickle just comes in with a solid tone, I get great tones and can capture all but larger gold rings, basically any gold that sits above a nickle on the disc range I lose, but I capture all the gold at or below nickle - great! Like you said, notch off, disc at min and it all shines! Can't wait to get it into the field.

Thanks jabbo - I'll give it a try.

Thanks Hank - every Tesoro brings something new to the game. You gotta love it!

Tip 7 If you're Dealing with the notch filter, different coils and different ground balance will affect the positioning of the setting.

Thanks - I was wondering how a change of coil would effect the unit.

It sure does I used the 10+12 concentric on it recently and had to adjust higher on the dial CCW to get the nickel tone, you know when you got the right detector when your feared at a competion hunt everyone has there eye on you, to bad the CSC can't be used at most of the hunts, it's like cheating!!! I have added manual GB, I have found that as long as the detector stays quiet, then you don't loose depth in different GB settings (in disc mode). If the GB is way off then you'll get blips and chirps, but you still don't really loose depth, you just have more noise to contend with. But I may not have the best test garden.
