Just got my Excalibur

Hi everyone,

Been reading the beach forum for a while now and finally decided to take the $$$ plunge.

Just got my Excalibur from Ron's Dixie Metal Detectors, If your reading this Ron, Thanks! He got me a great deal on a Very slightly used Excal 1000.

I took it to a playground for about thirty minutes for the first time out and couldn't believe how sensitive it is to small objects.

After sealing the coil protector with sealant (a good tip I got from reading the posts)I took it to the beach the weekend. All I can say is WOW! This detector is awesome! It didn't care if you were in dry sand, wet sand, or knee deep in water. It was stable the whole time, and it still picked up the smallest of items.

Didn't get any Gold this time out, but I did get a couple "silver"? ear rings. Got there at the peak of High tide, no big deal this was just suppose to be a training exercise anyway:)

I've got a ton of questions for the experts out there but I'll try spread them out over time. But I would appreciate if anyone could answer this one.

Next weekend we are suppose to be having negative low tides, I assume this should be the best time to go. If so, where should I be searching? I noticed all the other detectorists were mainly working the wet sand as the tide was going out, and I've never seen anyone detecting "in" the water at this beach. Should I follow their lead and detect the wet sand or should I get wet?

It could be that their detectors are not waterproof like your Excal so that is as deep as they can go.:sadwalk:
It may be that there are dangerous riptides or heavy surf at that beach which would make it difficult to work the deeper areas.:look:
Possibly the mine is the most productive area of that beach so that's what gets worked the most.:bouncy:
If you are really lucky it is just local habits and nobody thinks it is worthwhile to go deep so they have possibly left a load of loot out there for you. (very few detectorists hunt past the knee depth here in Bermuda, I don't know why)
I am a fan of deeper hunting and it has worked for me so far.
The best answer to your querie is: It is probably because of a lot of different factors. Go out there and try different techniques until you find something that works for you. Do that until it stops working for you or you get bored and want to try something else.

Good Luck Mate!

Excal 1000

PS Read the goldenolde.com site as it has a wealth of information for water hunters.

If it is warm enough get in the water. The Excal can get totally wet while others can only get their coils wet. A lot of this depends on what part of the country you are in and the conditions of the ocean bottom.

I'm in Georgia, it's still pretty warm here right now, plenty of people still in the water and maybe losing stuff. I've noticed that most of the guys detecting are using what looks like Whites MXT's, whatever they are their definately not waterproof. I did run across one guy with a Minelab Quattro, he showed me a chain he just dug up (thirteen inches down in the wet sand). He said he found three gold rings the week before!

I'm just thinking that if everyone else is stuck on the shore then that might mean more loot for me in the surf:razz: What do ya think?

there is some really good stuff in the water too. Your machine is waterproof so use it to it's best capabilities and go where others can't go!! Make sure you have a good strong sand scoop for the water.
