Hey Guys, the big brown truck just rolled up,any tips I should be aware of regarding the calibration? THANKS, Aaron

O.K. , it didnt say that in the manuel. Thanks, Aaron

trying to calibrate in all metal will drive you nuts.

Just don't work but with one exception..........

I'm the only one to suggest this in the last 3.5 years that I know of...

Once you get it calibrated, switch to all metal. You will see a number on the meter.....probably 124 or 125.
You will see this number every time you switch to all metal when pinpointing or when the detector starts up at turn on.
If you want a fast calibration without a coin, just switch to all metal before you turn on. Adjust the meter to this default startup reading or all metal reading. A dime should read 180 when you wave it over the coil in disc mode.

It's cheating, but works in a pinch if you need it.

You do have to watch...

If you start up in disc mode and the detector sees anything before you can check calibration then the meter will be wrong. Iron, a noise spike , anything.

You could also calibrate to the iron reading if you want (big negative number), but that's too confusing (and touchy).

This whole concept came about this way.......

F.O.D. had noticed that the Sov always starts up with the same number on the meter (when calibrated). I had noticed that the Sov always starts up on the same tone. Put the two together.

Right tone for the right meter reading either in disc at startup or all metal (unless it's iron).

When you switch to pinpoint or any other all metal mode you will see the same number return to the meter (if not over iron). This is an instant calibration check if you hold the coil still.

You will see this number dance around when playing the coil over the target in all metal. The more it moves, the stronger the target is (size, depth). You will notice a shift in tone if the target is strong. The audio tone and meter reading are tied together just like disc mode. You can't seperate the two.

Okay, I have the meter on, followed the manuel, except I calibrated the quarter to 180-181. Thing is, dimes and pennies register the same. The Wheaties and Indians are lower though. I guess this is normal, huh? Also something I dont get is I have a big silver ring, I cant get it to lock on, the numbers bounce all over and it is low, like between 100-145, and it gives a real low sound like junk. I tried my gold wedding band and it locks right on to 179. Oh well, lots to learn yet.

The copper pennies, clad coins and silver will all read the same while the IH and the new zinc pennies will read lower. The big silver ring you have must not be silver and being it is bouncing all over I wonder if you may have some other alloy in it like Stainless steel or the metal they use to make the new class ring with. For a gold ring to read 179 it must be one big ring for gold to read that high as the 179 sounds like a silver ring as this is where they will read.
Try to keep the numbers no higher than 180, i set mine to 179-180 as you will find most reference to different coins is when the meter is calibrated to 180 max.

That silver ring is the same one I posted a few weeks ago. I found it around 6" down. It says it is Sterling, but now that you mention it, just when I leave it sitting around, after a few monthhs, it turns all dark. My wedding ring is a 14 kt wide band. It is a heavy ring. I'm going to test out some of my wifes thin gold bands see what they register. Thanks, Aaron
