Just got back from shooting the AK .... sighted it in pretty close at about 70 yards. Shot some old out of date fire extinguishers .... that was cool

The way it's assembled and the lack of precision of how most of the parts are stamped out it's never going to be a sniper rifle. It's most redeeming feature is that it will shoot and not jam after being drug through the mud or not cleaned for months at a time.

..... I can't imagine having to defend my family from further away than what I was shooting today. The AK is fun to shoot.

.... We were shooting at the same place on the approx 12" trunk of a dead pine tree at the edge of the private property rifle range. M-16 versus AK ammo. You can see the slightly larger AK entry holes and the through trunk penetration exit damage over the M-16. We figured 30 more rounds would have us complete chopping it down ... ran out of ammo .... bummer.

The M-16 is far more accurate at distance but does less damage to the target. For up close (30 to 70 yards) and personal I'll take the AK. For weight and accuracy, I'd select the M-16. Ease of cleaning and ability to fire when filthy with dirt / mud ... I'll take the AK. The AK is also less expensive to buy.

A benefit of shooting cheap Russian lacquer coated steel cartridges is that they can be more easily "policed" with a magnet.
