Just got an MXT Pro

Last week I upgraded, after 3 years, from the M6 to the MXT Pro. So far so good. I have only one question so far, and to me it sounds like a dumb one, but here it is. I have never used a threshold machine since the M6 is a silent search tector. How do I use the threshold when hunting. Right now I have it just faint in the background. I listen to it but I have no idea how it benefits me. Help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hey little congrats on the mxt it's a great machine.
As for threshold set it to where it's just audible you want to be able to just barely hear it that's all.
What happens on a deep target just outside of the range for your mxt to show an id or give you a tone you will get a slight rise in the threshold you can test this to see what it sounds like by setting up your detector and lock the ground tracking for the test.
Sit it on a wood table or something not metal and wave a coin under the coil and slowly back away from the coil with the coin,, when it gets out of vdi range you'll hear the rise of the threshold on a regular mxt you'd have to use the relic mode as the tone of the threshold sounds like the single tone of the c/j mode and would be hard to tell but with the pro using the tones it should work ok.
This test was posted by Jeff Foster in another forum and he also has it in his book the mxt edge I'd highly recommend because it has a lot of useful information all about the mxt and will help with the learning process.
And hey that's not a dumb question I also came from a silent search detector and even though I saw tons of posts about the threshold I never understood it until I read that post of Jeff's and did the test and it made sense then I went out after that and bought his book and I have read it several times I wouldn't take nothing for it would take years to find all the info in that book.
Oh and by the way when doing the test turn the disc to zero so you don't disc out the coin and will be able to tell the change.

Thanks Rick. I'v got Jeffs' book coming.

Hey that's great I know you'll get a lot out of that book I don't know if whites updated the new manual for the mxt pro but the one for the regular mxt just don't have enough info about these detectors it gives you the basics and that's about it same for the video all it says is you should have a slight hum but nothing about what the hum is for. lol
Good luck and let us hear about them good finds your gonna be getting.

You're going to love it! HH, Nancy

Manuals always fall flat on explanations so........books like Jeff's, and people (like the ones around here) pick up the slack. Here's to the slack "picker uppers"!:beers:

I should have Jeff's book by Monday...I hope!

I got an MXT PRO for a gift from my wife. I have never been into metal detecting before and she found me on White's web site looking at all the detectors. I have to admit, I was curious and even delighted to see this as a hobby. I bought Jeff's book on the MXT and have read it at least a hundred times, but have brain fade every time I use the machine. White's stated it is easy to learn, I must be dumb. I have found a few pieces of change, but not like I see others that tell me I missed some great coins. Any help would be vastly appreciated with this. To find enough clads to buy outside deck furniture must be a record. Congratulations to the lady. I only wish that I can be half as good as she is.

Just keep at it and one of these days it will all fall into place and you will be hooked for life

Hey Starvin, I would suggest you start out learning your detector at some tot-lots if you have the opportunity. It's really easy digging along with consistent ground conditions and terrain. This allows you to go out and be able to concentrate on the fewest variables as you learn the basics of your detector through repetition. You'll become a pro at popping coins & jewelry out of the sand or tanbark before you know it. Then you'll be ready to go into the dirt and not feel lost. The MXT is easy to learn enough to be having a lot of fun quickly. You just build on your proficiency from there and it just gets more and more fun. JMHO Good luck and keep at it...
