Just got a nice used IDX Pro and have 2 questions,

First let me say it's a sweet detector and it's just what i want for my trashy areas because the recovery speed is as good as it gets and is equal to my Minelab Musky and fisher 1236x2.I primarily want to use it for hunting trashy areas and i mean trashy with both iron and aluminum and mix in some hot rocks.I have an XLT and over time i acquired a Black Max 5.3, a 3x6 shooter, and a Blue max 3.5.The Pro is gonna be my primary trash hunter now and wonder if anyone could give an opinion on which coil would give the best performance for target separation and depth ?
I'm considering the Mr Bill upgrades and especially like the threshold and GB control and wondering if someone who had it done could give their impressions?
Thanks for any input. HH Bill

Hi Bill,

I have had several IDX's both the pro and the classic. The GB mod is sweet and helps to let you hear stuff as deep as the ID circuit works. Yes, I found on several machines that they would ID deeper than the audio will give a response unless switching to the black sand mode with the disc at 9:00 or below.

The last one I had modded was a Classic and the boost made a big difference in the response on stuff in the nickel range. It was already a hot one in air tests on higher conductors matching the Pro models. :) Like Monte has said several times "I should have kept that one"

Hello Bill,

Been looking at the IDX Pro myself. I currently have six machines (only one White's for now, a Surf II). Like you, I use small coils too: I have two 4.5", one 5.5" and one 5.75" for various machines.

When considering different coil/machine combos for use in heavy trash I'll often just put a pulltab and a dime on the ground side-by-side and see how close I can put them and still pick up the dime with the pulltab disc'ed out.

I also have a dime glued to a small piece of cardboard with a 'tab on either side about 2-3" away. The rigs that will hit on the dime get the nod for trashy sites.

The Surfmaster does very well in this type of testing. My two Tesoros do very well also (I have a Sidewinder and a Tejon. I don't doubt that your machine will give excellent target seperation too, particularly with the smaller coils.

Sorry that I couldn't answer your question specifically, but maybe you can find the answer yourself with a little testing.

HH All!

"First let me say it's a sweet detector and it's just what i want for my trashy areas because the recovery speed is as good as it gets and is equal to my Minelab Musky and fisher 1236x2.".... Let me just offer my opinion that the quickness of response and recovery speed, combined with small iron trash handling characteristics, are better than the Fisher, Musky, and most anything else out there. My biased opinion, of course. :D

"I primarily want to use it for hunting trashy areas and i mean trashy with both iron and aluminum and mix in some hot rocks.".... For working thru iron infested sites, I definitely love my IDX Pro especially with the 4" and 6

I bought a like new IDX Pro after reading almost every post you made about the whites detectors and especially the IDX over the past year or so. The Musky is an excellent detector for me and it's a keeper but always wondered how it would be with TID and prefer it over the 1236 because it goes deeper and has the manual GB.

I understand the aluminum vs iron as it's a constant battle at most of my sites.

I have posted many times about my preference for the Black Max 5.3 and it is my most productive coil on the Eagle Spectrum and XLT. I was wondering how the coils responded to the Pro and you answered that.

As far as the Mr Bill mods i also prefer just a slight threshold hum,and a manual GB especially here in northern delaware and i agree for the most part that only minor adjustments are needed to control the falsing and it sure is nice to have the option.

Thanks so much Monte and will definately go back and reread some of your past IDX posts

Hi Skillet,

From the little time i've had with the IDX Pro i'm very happy with it',and i really like all different coil combinations plus they interchange with the XLT as do the battery packs and charger.
As you do i also try many different target separation and blind tests, even buried an old horseshoe and axe head about a foot or so away from coins in my yard and try various coils and settings on my detectors.Another test i like is to surround a dime or quarter with about 4 or 5 pulltabs or nickels and ever widen the spread until i hit the dime with tabs disced out, perhaps not very scientific but it does bring to light the target masking effect.

Never had a Tesoro yet but considering one in the future as i would like to try a higher single frequency detector.Right now i'm sticking with the XLT,IDX Pro and the Sovereign GT , Musky combination.

Thanks for answering the post and yes i will do my own experimenting but i'm feeling a bit lazy working out in this heat and humidity 6 long days a week and wishing for fall.

Thanks again
HH Bill

I really appreciate reading your experience with the IDX series and looking forward to the MR Bill Mods .I know you were a long time 1236x2 and did well with them and i really enjoyed mine also but the Pro is gonna take it's place now

I have one word of advice

LISTEN TO MONTE :D

HH Bill

having the mods. They make a great machine even better.

I gave a lot of thought to getting another 1236. That is, until the little ID Excel came along. It is the first truly worthy competitor I have seen for the IDX in the same price range.
