Just got a Deus and need help

Hello everyone,
Got a Deus on Tuesday then on Wednesday found out that a field that has produced (morgan, half dime, SC state button, grape shot etc.) was sold. So I am under the gun to learn this machine ASAP. I have two weeks until the deal is closed and ownership transfers. I have read articles, watched many videos on the Deus before even getting this machine but I have a few questions that maybe the pros can assist with.
  • ...When using the detector yesterday in a park it chattered a lot. Is that due to sensitivity? I was using GP-Maxx
  • ...If I make changes to one of the stock programs (reactivity, silencer, etc.) do those changes default back once the control box is turned off?
  • ...Ground balancing, is it best to pump or set it manually? If I understand correctly the Deus shows you a calculated setting on the top and the setting the machine is detecting with on the bottom.
  • ... Is there a good factory setting (GP Maxx, Relice or Deus Fast) for finding deep coins and buttons that I can use w/o confusing myself with reactivity and silencer settings until I learn them at a later date?
Sorry to be in a rush on this. This was the field that I was going to learn the detector on. We have been a bunch before and it is where I learned the AT Pro. Realize it takes time and practice to master it and this request is unrealistic. I live close enough to get a copy of Andy's book in person, perhaps another time.

I am looking for coins, buttons etc. in a field that has grass, some rocks, cows and remnants of the old store. The field was used as a carnival circa early 1900s, early silent movie screening area and had a store dating from the 1800s that was later used as a post office. Hopefully I can take tomorrow off from work and get at it. Thank you for any input and have a good one.

In a situation like you are in,i would just stick in in Basic1 that is about as easy a prog as it gets,it will only give a signal on a decent signal. It will turn it into a beep and dig machine and ideally suited for your needs until you have time to learn its full potential.

Basic1 is the factory default prog when you fire the Deus up,its a very good prog to get started with, infact its that good many folks stick with just that one prog.

I used the Deus for at least two years as a beep and dig. I didn't change much of anything until I got Andy's book and made it to Bootcamp. The camp was a great experience and made me confident enough to change things like a wild man. You will probably have good luck with manual ground balance. You can keep an eye on the readings and see if you stray too far. The machine will go back to the basic settings when you shut it off if you don't save your changes as a new program. You can make a copy of a program you like and then change things as you see fit and then change the name when you save it. The main gain for me was notching 98 and above out. This gets rid of the great sounding iron wraparound. People pointed out that most of the programs are set up for European hunting. Writing your own programs lets you set up the machine to match your hunting style. Changes are pretty simple. You can set up two programs side by side that you can toggle between to check out your changes. Andy is very helpful so contact him if you get into trouble. Good luck, I bet you love the Deus.

Thank y'all,
I'm ok with beep and dig as long as the deep targets are what's beeping. This particular field is on a gentle decline and has an underground spring so I think big coins will have sunk over the years. The Morgan was about 8-10" when my brother found it. I hit the 1857 half dime at probably 6" with the AT Pro. I was able to take off tomorrow and will be in the field at 0700 EST. I wish I had more time but we just have to handle the cards that we are dealt.

I would use either Basic 1 or Deus Fast.... if you get a lot of chatter you can either I) lower the sensitivity a little at a time until it quiets down or 2) lower the TX one notch at a time.... or3) see if the chatter is EMI and try changing the frequency you are using...
the more you mess with it at first will make it more frustrating so make only the changes that you need for now. later on when the pressure if off is the time to play with settings.... get Andy's book.... you will make your money back in one or two outings...

Start out at a easy area to hunt not a lot of trash or iron...and lower your sens to about 75 ground bal is very important but if you get only a couple of bars leave it on 90..stick with the 9" coil

Was out for quite a while in the field and it was a blast. The Deus is super light and easy to swing. Field is overgrown pretty bad so I didnt get to do all of it. The finds in the picture were all pretty deep and I'm amazed the detector found them so easy. Each signal was really loud and clear. I am not sure if the thing on the left is a button or what. It has a small shank through the middle. Still have a lot to learn. Thanks for all the tips.

Sounds like you are having a blast with your new Deus, its good when you start finding items from day one,i agree with you on the machine being light and i can swing mine all day for the 1st time in a few years due to back problems, but the Deus does allow me to detect all day again.

Great new about your finds, just keep using the machine as you are at the moment.Good luck
