I know everyone usually feels this way-maybe I need an id machine, maybe I'm missing something. Then I start reading the other forums-try it. They're filled with posts about id problems and the usual solution is beep-dig. Then I sit back and smile about my little Compadre and Silver umax.

I bought my first "target id" machine this year. It has been a long slow learning curve, and it does provide a considerable amount more information than any beep and dig machine. I like my Tesoro's a lot....but it takes a little getting used to switching back and forth between the two different machines. They both have their place I guess.

Every good deep find that I got with a detector with a ID display, the ID was out in left field and iffy. Looking at a screen is mostly a waste of time for me. I even thought about putting some tape over the display. If I get a repeatable deep signal, I'm digging. So, give me a detector that's light, fast to pinpoint, deep and dependable. Three cheers for the Tesoro Vaquero.

OH, I have an Ace 250 and a Royal Sabre and sure they have their place. It's just easy to get hooked on ID. Been trying more for the gold since it went so high and it sometimes gets hard to put up with all the trash. Just thinking out loud.

The Tesoro's are nice machines. I own three of them and enjoy them immensly. That being said, they are not necessarily the deepest or the best that there is on the market. They are however good enough for 99% of the hunting that the average person will ever do....so it could be said...and this is just my opinion....that anything above and beyond a Tesoro...is just putting money into someone elses pocket, who put the effort into adding bells and whistles to their machines. I find myself using my Tesoro machines when I want to just relax, listen and dig. Watching the screen can take some of the fun out of it.....

I got my first target ID machine this year too, and while it is interesting to play with, its not the most reliable machine I ever used. I've been detecting 40+ years and my machines till now have always been beep 'n dig. I am older and I don't have the energy and stamina I once had, so I thought a target ID machine for quick coin hunts to local parks would be the thing. Greatly reduce the amount of digging. Well yes, that's true but I am missing a lot of stuff too. Just today I went over a spot I covered with my target ID machine on Saturday but today I used my Silver uMax. I pulled a few coins out where I had rejected targets Saturday. I must admit I also pulled out a wad of foil and a pull tab too that were rejected by the target ID machine. My Vaquero and Silver uMax are my go-to machines.

Yea, I'm an "Intruder" here guys (Fisher F75 LTD & White's XLT) but don't shoot me yet! I've been Swingin' in the field since the 70"s & back then sound & "TONE" meant everything! I'll admit to getting kinda addicted to all the bells and whistles (VDI etc...) of the "Modern" machines... BUT - WE seem to get handicapped by this technology! Are we missing Great finds for relying on those NUMBERS? YOU BET! It's always struck me as funny that we SAY we want "Depth" but we rely on a MACHINE to properly ID a target at depth! NOT gonna happen! Sure, I get proper ID's at 6 or even 8 inches in IDEAL conditions BUT beyond that, NO WAY! LEARN YOUR MACHINES guy's!! Rely on what's between your ears! DEVELOP your ears & you will come out WAY ahead! I've never been a Tesoro kinda guy but that may be MY loss, not yours! SOLID machines and can't beat that warranty huh? HH!!

Audio is one aspect and a visual ID unit is another but combining both to an experienced operator certainly gives him an edge. Certainly a good ID metered unit is an important tool to an experienced operator but becoming a meter watcher and letting targets go because the ID is not spot on can cost you and certainly help you have an idea what you are digging for and a lot depends on the site the experience of the operator and if you are a coin or relic hunter..to name a few aspects as many do well with either.

I have and use both, but really feel that learning and using beep and dig machines for a number of years before picking up an ID machine was a positive thing. I depend on the audible signal on my ID machines first, then combine my impression of that with the display. when deciding to dig. Quite often I've dug an off sounding signal with questionable ID that turned out to be a bit of jewelry or other desirable target. In the final analyses, no matter what type of machine you use, your eyes are the only 100% positive ID.
My two bits,
BB
