I just got 705 like my Garrett 1500 with bell tone. Read were I should hunt coins in A M IS that right? Which coil 4 coins or gold?

Leroy 1937,
Congrats. on your 705, It's a great detector and I am sure you will love it once you familiarize yourself with it. Although you should read the manual thoroughly, as a new 705 owner, I will give you my tips on starting out. First of all, set sensitivity down to 2 or 3 and then auto noise cancel once you are out on a site you want to hunt. Then, auto ground balance. Make sure that when you noise cancel and ground balance, you are on a clear patch with no target ID's below. Then, I would suggest that you raise the sensitivity sufficiently high without any chatter. As a newby to the 705, I would hunt in pattern two in the beginning which will eliminate iron and many trash targets. Also, don't forget to adjust the volume control depending on whether or not you wear headphones and finally, I would suggest using multi tones so that you can get used to the different sounds that individual TID's make. In time, you will learn the particular's of the machine and can experiment in different patterns, etc. As far as a coil, I began with the standard 9"- 7.5 Mhz but since have purchased the 6"-18.5 DD Mhz and have found a lot more deep silver coins.
HOpe that this helps and Happy Hunting

Ok the very 1st thing is to welcome you to the site!

My suggestion is simple. Read the FAQFAQ on the top of the page. More info there than you can learn almost.

Everybody has a different style to hunt. Example. I always used pattern 1, 3 tone, and standard coil.

IMHO practice and then practice some more! Hunt and dig all signals until you get a hang of it. Just get comfortable with your MD and you will be fine, Beale.

Welcome to forum.I use all metal alot and let my ears sort out the targats . I like 4 tones. If I am not using all metal I use pattern one like Beale. I have learned that if in all metal and my detector gives a high tone with alot of low tones , most of the time there is somethimng else in the hole with that iron or trash. It may be trash too but it will almost always be a high conductive target. I have found many coins like that that came from yards that have been hunted by atleast three other people before i hunted it. Be sure to read the faq faq post at top of page , there is alot of good information there.

The biggest hurdle I faced with my 705 (besides having the shaft assembled the wrong way) :O was remembering what the little icons mean.

I could never remember what icon was what as I scrolled through the menu. None of them make sense. I think the volume and tone are the only ones barely recocnizeable for what they represent.

Wish it was identified in plain english rather than some icon that could mean anything.

The old X-terra 70 had the panel clearly marked as to what did what.

I use pattern 3 and 4 with 3 tones to keep it simple. I use the 6" coil first over area then go to 9" MF and get the deeper silver. 6" get the coins mixed in with trash. LOL

Hi Leroy,

After reading FAQ and getting yourself a TID no. chart you probably don't need too much help ...the best thing is to just get out there and start using it and learn that way.
Patterns are easy to make or just use the standard ones.
I would not hunt AM for coins but thats just me...I like to disc. out iron and foil.
Bung it in Tracking and your GB is taken care of.
Good luck...looking forward to seeing your future finds

thanks 4 help
well see what happens
still don't know how to set tone will read manual

I like the 3khz coil for coin hunting. That thing is a coin magnet!

I hunt pattern 1 and 4 tones usually, but increasingly use 99 tones (actually 28 or so). I do not mess with the sensitivity when I Noise Cancel. I also run in Ground Tracking. I seem to get the best results with the 5x10 or 6" HF DD coils. I do also have the 10.5 DD MF coil but have not used it enough to really learn it well. I plan to fix that little issue this spring, otherwise it will have to go on the block. I have not used the stock 9" Concentric but two or three times since I got my DD coils.
