just getting started in montana need help picking detector

I think the drain on the battery would be minimal. I had a Deleon for a year. I liked the detector, but found that I relied on the sound more than the display. I lived in Az. at the time, and found the display was hard to see in the Az. sun. I've had a Cibola which is a great detector if you don't want the hassel of ground balancing. I now have a high tone Vaquero that I really like.

an etrac would do great imo....:clapping::minelab::detecting:
then a garrett pin pointer pro..:garrett::clapping:

Whites MXT three seperate modes.
Coin and jewelry for that type of hunting.
Relic for those Ghost town hunts.
Prospecting to find that gold in Montana.
Very little learning curve, a good turn on and go detector

What part of Montana are you from? The Minelabs work great here, for coins and for prospecting. Its to bad that you cant send or receive Pm's yet but when you can give me a holler and I will help where i can.

From N. Idaho - I'd recommend Whites MXT due to the propecting and relic mode as well as the fact that is has excellent ground tracking for those minerlized areas.

You are about 6 hours away. My suggestion is take a look at the Minelab Safari and start looking for real old parks and old houses that you could get permission to hunt. If you feel like taking a drive this summer I can take you to some good places. shoot me a line at nurse59635@bresnan.net

If you are unsure about how attached you are going to be with the hobby, start with an ACE 250. People have said that it's a $700 detector put in a $250 case. You can switch coils and it does have a lot of the features the 'big boys' have. If you know or are pretty sure you are going to stay with it and want to push the edge discovering new places and new things, then get one of the 'big boy' units. The E-trac is one of the best. You can adjust a kajillion settings or turn it on and go. Do the fine tuning down the road if you like.
There are 3 or 4 other machines in the $250-$300 range that are really good. Tesoro has a lifetime warranty. I have two of their water machines. But, when I go dry, it's the E-Trac with the X-1 and a large and a small coil. When I use the ACE is use the pro pointer.

It's really nice to see all the helpful hints and the offers to go help you in the posts above....Jim

looking really hard at the tesoro cibola. thinking it might do a good job ,good warrantyand is basic unit not to many buttons. also possible good trade in or up unit.am i headed in right directoin???? thanks for all suggestions and help. this is a really awesome web sight cuddos to the creator.....

Start with a less expensive detector. At first everyone enjoys detecting but after learning that great finds are far and few some very expensive detectors end up in storage leaking battery acid all over the place.
I fell in love with detecting as a teenage in Billings! Those were the good ol days! Silver just under the surface back then.

I started with a bounty hunter, had it for a month went to a fisher had it for a short time then to the X terra 50 then the 70 before I settled on the Explorer SE The first thing I noticed with the FBS detectors was the incredible depth and it locked onto silver like a magnet. The best advice out there is buy the best that you can afford then spend the time to learn it. For me it was the Explorer and I spent allot of money to figure it out, in hind site I should have got it first as I am positive I would have several hundred more silver coins in my collection.

"thanks for looking"

Is that some kind of a joke. Did you sucker me in thinking I was going to read something and then get that kind of a posting?

I clicked and that is what I got

Remember, as you posting said "look intelligent"

You really need to tell us just what you are searching for?

It is hard to recommend a detector unless we know if you are hunting for gold; relics; or coins? Some are better than others for each category.

As for Tesoro, you really cannot go wrong with Tesoro.

jhette thanks for the compliment I really appreciate it.
I also use Tesoro's and the MXT, was the detector that came to mind when he asked for advice.
Whites MXT has three of these most useful features.
I had no intention of questioning your intellect
