Just curious why Minelab doesn't

ever seem to enter into discussions here on this forum. It would seem to me that hopefully their input would be the authorative answer to many of the questions that are asked.
Granted it would take a significant amoumt of someone's time to monitor and reply to posts, but at the same time it could be time well spent knowing that a lot of potential buyers come here just to read about questions and concerns that present owners have.
Almost everyone knows more about the operation of the Explorer than I do, but even the "pros" seem to have at least some of their answers almost 180 degrees apart. When I posted a question about mineralization one response was that the circuitry of the Explorer compensates for those conditions on it's own, and then somewhere else someone says that perhaps mineralization is the reason that someone else is not getting the depth they are expecting. I personally would like to hear what Minelab has to say, and quite honestly I'd be tempted to give their reply a lot of credibility.
Everyone that has answered any of my questions has been more than willing to help, but I'd still like to hear at least something from the guys who designed and built this unit. Just my thoughts.

dick shultz is a real good guy to talk to or email, the 2 answeres you got on mineralization are both correct, I may not of gotten into the complete answere enough and was to general. I put it more into a general way of how minerization would affect a unit.As I posted a reply and said with the XS you are pretty well set Fred and as you said you got 2 180 degree answeres.......but you really didnt-here is from your 2 answeres you got"Explorer compensates for those conditions on it's own, and then somewhere else someone says that perhaps mineralization is the reason that someone else is not getting the depth they are expecting." Both of these are correct and not 180 degrees apart. You stated you would not know it if you steped on it, now if you place a question like that why would you want the most tecnical answere to it? I put things as plain as I can for a question and between any 2 people here in different states no situation will be the same.Basically not always a text book situation you can only take the info you are looking for and try to use it to your advantage to go out and have fun, heck theres so many repeat questions but I dont save any of my emails at all because as I see it if Im answereing from ready Im not learning either..hope this can help you and have a ball......HH Bri

another thing is a lot of folks will print out or save the info they see which is really good to fall back on also, I dont have any saved tho
myself so if my heads not all that clear that day answeres may be cluttered too but when you save and compare a few of the repeat questions you will see the same overall input. As theres a lot of hunting situations for the unit..theres a lot of variations also......HH Bri

Hi Fred - I can understand how all this information can be confusing but often it depends on what question is asked and how it is interpreted.
Regarding minerlization ... the Explorer does have a unique system that automatically compensates for ground mineraliztion. It works well especially when the ground mineralization is difficult, such as, it is variable or extreme. You only have to briefly compare it with a detector that requires manual adjustment (or has a fixed setting) to see how nice and effective this feature is. It isn't perfect, however, and some very experienced users can make a manually adjusted machine work well but it takes a fair amount of effort and knowledge.
As for mineralization and depth ... there are areas of extreme mineralztion which will affect (sometimes severely) the depth capability of all detectors. Again some detectors are better than others and special techniques can help. I recall Jim Upstate mentioning using the semi-auto sensitivity mode in a hunt in Alabama which has particularly bad "red" soil to allow them to hunt reasonably effectively.
Anyhow questions are usually only answered in the context in which they are asked and there is genarally a lot of related factors which can also affect things. In fact, there are so many combinations and permutations of factors that almost any answer will have exceptions, etc.
Sometimes things in this hobby just get too technical and complicated. As I get older I actually enjoy it more by slowing down, relaxing and just trying to enjoy myself 8^P.
HH ... Gord.

there just is way to many changes site to site and state to state, user to user even tho it's the same unit we are using... I like it simple and have found that by watching the posts for yrs and reading is very simple to adjust to others problems or questions they may have. HH Bri

I can tell you they are so busy each day that they would have to hire someone full time to answer questions on the Internet forums. I've visited their Home Office before and we couldn't have a decent visit without constant interruptions . Even over dinner it was hard to focus on business for trying to discuss metal detecting in general. I know it can be frustrating to receive multiple answers and opinions when your wanting a definitive answer, but most of the time it is the general public that masters metal detectors in the field. More so than the designers, manufacturers or Office staff. We usually have to digest several opinions to decide which will work for us. It still boils down to practical field experience. Practice makes perfect, so to speak. If you have specific questions that aren't getting answered, call or email Minelab, there should be one of several personnel that would be glad to help. If you need their info, just send me an email. Good hunting, David @ Dixie
