just curios about everyone who metal detects

I wast wandering if it's just me or everyone who pursues this hobby. I've been detecting for about 10 months and really enjoy this hobby. Have been very fortunate to find quite a bit and the challenge to find more just doesn't go away. I guess I'm hooked like many of you are.
My question is, I find myself constantly detecting even when I don't have my detector, shopping, walking through the parking lot, going to a restaurant, scanning the lot and even at a bar. I'm not sure, but I think this hobby conditioned my mind to do this. I do find coins and add those to my collection also. My wife thinks I'm crazy, but what the hell, I'm having fun.
JUST WANTED TO KNOW IF IT'S JUST ME OR ANYONE ELSE WHO HAS THE SAME MIND SET.
Happy Hunting!

I do the exact same thing. Last week while walking, I found a rock(quartz) with what appears to be gold in it. I am waiting to confirm it, but I am certain i made a good find in landscaping stone in a parking lot. Finds come from anywhere.

Only thing wrong with this is, if your busy watching the ground for pennies and dimes you're much less watching your backside for aggressors! Many times when I go shopping I notice some dude just hanging around watching for an easy buck! Most times when I go detecting, I sit in the locked car and enjoy a sandwich and a soda while I observe my surroundings, see who's there, what they are doing before I get out the detector. Sticking out your neck, looking for pennies while some punk's looking for dollars, ain't real smart. Good luck!

Same here triple sss I pick my wife up at a train station everyday and I walk around looking for coins etc. In matter of fact every where I go my head is down and scanning the ground.

Silversmith, I guess I just don't see things that way. I am a 6'2' guy who goes 250lbs and can handle himself. I also love the 2nd amendment andam known to carry a weapon. I have never been afraid to walk anywhere. I couldn't live that lifestyle.

Good precautions. When I look, I watch around me for the simple reason that I don't want to look conspicuous and try to make my searching look like I'm out for a walk and enjoying the day. Then, if I'm in an area with lots of people and I find something really great, I'll pretend or actually drop something out of my pocket and reach down to get it AND the find. Several times people have tried to tell me THEY lost the item-so I've learned to either step on it or any other thing that comes to mind. But yes, to answer the forum,it is a lifelong habit that I enjoy.

I do the same thing. Here in Minnesota, I can't go detecting for over half the year, so I like to look for things on the ground. Yesterday my wife dragged me along when she went clothes shopping at the local mall. While she was shopping, I walked over to the corner of the parking lot where the plows pile the snow before they truck it away. I found 5 sets of keys, a ladies watch that runs, a five dollar bill, a brass pot pipe, and 3.50 in change. I spent the five at the Dairy Queen in the mall and tossed the change in my State Fair jar. I really should find out where the dump trucks drop the snow they haul away from the mall. I'd bet there would be a lot of goodies there.

My nose is always to the ground, looking for anything interesting...I am also the King of Free, so if you throw it away and it is usefull to me, it is probably coming home with me...lol

HH,

I'm the same way, always looking. I also know where one of the cities nearby dumps their snow.. I'll have to give that spot a looksy. LOL
