BOUGHT TWO 7" COILS ONE WIDE SCAN AND THE OTHER DISCRIMINATOR.HAS ANYONE USED THE WIDE SCAN ? NEED SOME FEEDBACK ON THIS COIL.WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?IS IT DEEPER THAN THE DISCRIMINATOR?THANKS FOR YOU HELP.:tesoro:

The widescan gets less depth but makes a slightly wider scan and is more stable in mineralized soil than the concentric coil.

First, let me say "Way to go!" because I have had some of my best all-around performance and success since '83 with a Tesoro and 7" concentric coils. I still believe it is the best "all purpose" coil to have on the working end of most Tesoro's for most applications.

That said, the "theory" is that a Wide-Scan (aka Double- D) coil can handle highly mineralized ground better. While this is true, it is also true that most hobbyists never search in some really nasty ground environments that might show off a D-D performance 'edge.' In "reality" however, I favor the generally better depth of detection afforded by a concentric coil, the better discrimination characteristics, and the ease of pinpointing with a concentric coil.

I do like some makes or models with a D-D coil in certain applications, but generally I haven't been too excited about a Tesoro D-D design. I am sure other readers, as well as me, will be looking for some honest field impressions as you put those two coils to the test, side-by-side, and report back with your findings.

I have both and have used the widescan with good success on my Eldorado in the mountains here when relic hunting around old lumber camps etc. I agree with Monte that the 7" concentric is a very good all around coil and use one for much of the coin shooting I do in local parks and fairgrounds. I think you'll like them both with the concentric being favored a bit.

I used to be a strictly concentric man until my 5.75 concentric connector was giving me trouble and decided to go to a well, very well hunted Central park area with wide open grass areas.I said what would help me here.I put on the 10"x12" widescan on the vaquero and made quick work of the whole area in two days with great finds, have hunted park in past with concentrics and had some disappointing results. With the widescan i was able to cover large areas fast! Found 2-silver dimes,2-nice Charleston trade tokens and about 5-wheat's.The widescans have changed my mined about fast and effective detecting techniques.Charles.Charleston.S.C.:csflag:

Well whith my golden umax I prefer the 7" widescan it gives me far clearer signals than the concentric , as far as depth its not a depth monster 4.5" max on coins at least on a dime BUT """ it is so good at seperating targets knife blade in the ground gets moor coverage I would like to try the 11" wide scan to see if it gets better depth but i can not experiment whith 100.00 and no one seems to know how deep the 11 will get coins at

Gunner the 11" would be awesome to scan a open field, my 10"X 12" W/S on air test with quarter gets 12" on the Vaquero.I have really jumped the fence to the w/s side, i hated them at first, but you are right, they are smooth as a knife blade on search pattern, quick coverage, good disc qualities, in my Tejon manual it say's the 11"w/s is made for the vq and tejon but do not see it for sell no were, does anyone know can a 11" w/s be had for the tejon.Charles.

I got 11" DD I use on the Silver Umax , it gets very good depth for an example in my test garden it will give soft mellow tone on a penny buried at a measured 10" ..I know most dont regard test garden results as an indicator of the detectors capability but hey it hits it ! the stock donut coil cant , its also light enough on the Umax to swing for hrs , excellent coverage and very good depth

I had an 11DD for the Tejon , I dont see them listed at Tesoro but I belive its an older DD for the Lobo that also suits the T V @C , you will see them listed on ebay now an then

I prefer the widescans myself, they are better at seperating targets next to each other and the coverage is better for the same sized coil.

I had my Tejon at the ocean the other day, dry sand hunting with the stock coil and l was quickly reminded of the dismal coverage I was getting at depth.
on coin sized targets down 6" or more the center of the coil is all that would pick them up, so at that depth or deeper, Im basically hunting with like a 3" coil.
If that works for you than a concentric would be fine but I want to cover more area with my sweeps. the design of windshield wiper coverage is a good one for those two reasons, seperation and coverage.
