still learning with new unit. first day out with mxt found 12 clad quarters numerious dimes and pennies, son has a coinmaster. we are hooked on whites

The MXT is the only detector I own, I have three coils & they cover about any place I would hunt. D2 6x10 & 4x6 what more could I ask for.

You bought a good machine. Congrats !

I've owned several detectors with displays, Etrac, F75, Garretts, etc and the MXT is the best detector I've owned - period! It offers just enough info on the display to make it an accurate and effective detector, without being complicated.

The guy that sold me my detector said the double d is the best for discriminating the ground. I like the eclipse 950 that came with it. I hunt mainly relics . And I also herd the depth is not as good with a double d. I have had it about a month still learning so far so good. I learned one thing. If it tells me its silver and one inch down and i dig more than 3 inches and still nothing it is a can. that's my worst enemy. digging a good signal and finding a pop can. This is my first post. let me know what my fellow detectionists think about the best coil to use is. I don't want to bypass anything ha ha

yours vary truly dufferhead

I use the stock 950 coil since I bought the MXT-E and do well with it.
Tried the 10 DD was not happy withit so sold it.

Congrats on the Mxt, my findings over the last few yrs are that the Mxt is one of the best vlf coin/jewelry detectors out there, once you are one with the detector, very familiar with it, you will love it, both me and my hunting partner run 5.3 eclipse coils for coins/jewelry, and do well finding both coins and gold jewelry. For tot lot hunting I use a 5" excelerator dd. Go easy on the discrimination and dig all, and don't get too serious with the screen Id at first, just dig if the audio is good on a target, it will all come together once you are familiar with a lot of targets, then the id will be a help in deciding where to dig, and sounds will be second nature, your success rate will soar.

I'm happy to hear you got a MXT. Congrats on your finds also. I wish you the best of luck with detecting and your son also. Now that's PRICELESS! HH, Nancy

What coil is best depends on the ground you are hunting in and your hunting style. The D2 excels in very mineralized ground with the small wiper blade type footprint. It sees less ground at one time and it has more coverage at depth than a concentric coil by design. Generally speaking, the concentric coil can be a bit deeper but because of the conical design, it is easy to miss deep targets and that is why it is so important to overlap your swings. The detecting pattern of a 9 inch concentric coil at the surface can be as little as 3 inches at depth while a DD coil at depth is close to what you have at the surface. The biggest problem for me with a DD coil is it sure likes to ID pop tops as quarters. Both types of coils have their advantages but if you want more and faster coverage at depth, the DD is the coil to use.

Larry, I agree with your description/comparison of DD vs concentric coils. And when your in a good area, the VDI accuracy, or inaccuracy, isn't a pro/con issue for me because if it showed a bottle cap signal I would dig it anyways. Even in a modern and active park those bottle caps should be dug as well. Lately, I've only used the D2 and covering areas I had already dug all the good signals I could find with the 950 and I am finding many more targets that only a DD can separate from the iron targets near by. A large concentric coil designed for depth is completely handicapped if there is iron right with the coin and even ground mineralization greatly effects a large concentric coil. The targets that a concentric coil is able to find are what I would call easy target, most of the old easy targets are already dug in areas that have been detected already. In order to stand a chance in finding 1800's coins in an area already detected, which is nearly everywhere, you need a coil that can find difficult targets and separates well. I am finding silver pretty regularly now that I am using the D2. I'm at peace with it showing bottlecaps as quarters, it makes up for it. In the past few hunts I have dug a barber half dollar, half dozen IH cents, several V nickels, several silver dimes, all in areas I covered heavily with the 950. All these areas also open to public and other detectorists on a regular basis.

son 'tan" and I have found well over 300 coins in the month and half, mostly out digging on weekends. example of finds 1939 merc dime in mint cond, 1942 quarter, 1942 nickle, oldest wheat 1914 found by tan he rubbed it in lol, total 15 0r more wheats, Tan dug 17 coins and old timer knife out of one hole. son is 15 years old and still likes to do things with me luckiest dad in the world. God has blessed me.

What a nice amount of finds. You and your son hunting together is priceless. Of course you probably wouldn't want it any other way with him finding the oldest coin. Hey, does your nickel have a mint mark on the back? Just wondered if it's a war nickel. THANKS for the wonderful post. HH, Nancy

Nice buy on your part.
I have owned the XLT,DFX and the V3i.
I'am happier with this MXT Pro then any detector i have ever owned
I run a D2 DD 10" coil in light to moderate trash.
Trash areas I use my SEF 6x8 DD coil. I sold my 6x10 DD from whites and my 5.3 eclipse coil.
This little 6x8 DD is the BOMB and I wouldn't trade it for a whole box of 4x6's.5.3's or 6x10's
Talk about seperation and depth...WOW ( put my 6x10 to shame ) If you will look at the charts in Jeff Fosters MXT EDGE book
He has plotted the perfomance of different style coils in different soil conditions... This book is a must have
This is just my opinion:detecting:

Tan and I went to home site occupied by Sherman during wbts. I found flat eagle button, small cuff button. Tan found 1967 o penny "He thinks". i lost my Mom three weeks ago. Detecting with son helps with every day pain of loss. She was the greatest. God bless all.

Sorry to hear about your lose. You will see her again one day.
