Hello Iowatreasure!
I just recently purchased one too! I have used it about 6 hours. Great Machine! Take some time and get to know it. I think you'll do well. I am already convinced that there is no other water detector in it's class. The weight goes away when you are in the water. Keep in touch!

iowatreasure i have had my Excalibur 1000 for 4 years now always hip-mounted because of the weight and it has been back to Minelab twice with the same problem, wiring inside the control box,i put it down as strain on the cables so now i have ordered the Babb's straight shaft from David Keith at www.dixie-metal-detectors.com may i say that i live in Australia and had tried 4 other distributors including the manufacturer of the shaft and none would ship to Australia, so i would like to say a big thank you to David Keith for his terrific service to overseas clients i will highly recommend his company to all my other detecting friends in Australia.
Judging from a lot of people who have the straight shaft i would say that it is a big improvement on the original shaft and the hip mounted version, mine hasn't arrived yet but i will be in the water with it as soon as it gets here.
Cheers Raoul
