Just bought a new Explorer SE

I have spent the last 5 years with a whites XLT which i love but its on its last leg. Today I purchased an explorer SE and I was wondering what adjustments you other SE owners are making to the factory settings to tweak the machine. The whites XLT is great because of how much you can customize and tweak it... i feel i lost a little of that witht the explorer SE.. What numbers should I be looking for on the FER CON scale for typical coins and jewelery??? what numbers should i definately not dig??? the XLT at least had a scale to help you translate the VDI information into probable targets. Its gonna be interesting learning this all over again but i am willing... I also hear a double or sometimes triple beep when i pass over a target that i never encountered with my XLT. Does this mean anything? Its like being a nubie all over again. Thanks for any help !! also, are their any websites that post preferred programs for the explorer SE???

I'm new to the Exp. myself but there is a ton of info. on the PREFERRED settings of most...All metal is my favorite as it is with a lot of users here. My settings right now are Gain-8 Tone, TH-8 Variability-10 Limits-10 Sensitivity-22 All metal...I am usually in the Smartfind screen but switch back to digital frequently to check the numbers...If you go back a couple weeks on the forum there is a chart that was posted as a help guide showing the various Fer. Con. #'s to help new users...Just go back & read last months posts & you'll be amazed at the wealth of info here...HH...TT

Mike the Explorer provides a wealth of information in the form of tones, not just the pitch of the tone (high, medium, low) but also the shape and behavior of the tones as you sweep the target. The double/triple beep responses are telling you that the target is on or near the surface e.g. this tells you the depth without having to look down at the depth meter. The Whites machines typically overload on such a target, the Explorer does not. It takes a much larger target to generate an overload signal on the Explorer. You can raise your coil several inches off the ground to verify this and better pinpoint/ID these surface targets.

A surface or near surface target can pollute a fairly large area around itself, masking nearby good targets. You can pick up some surface targets several inches in front of the coil (another good reason to get into the habit of raising your coil off the ground if you intend to dig the target else your pinpoint is apt to be off) if that gives you an idea of how much ground they can pollute. I have found a fair number of good targets hiding under this umbrella so when I'm hunting an area known for producing a number of good targets I will sneak around those near surface targets with the front of my coil to see if I can lock onto a nearby target that might be hiding. I'll even dig the surface target out of the way if I have to and especially if I think I heard a squeak of a good target nearby.
