Just bought a 705 Now What?

I just bought a 705 and with about 4 hours under my belt:wiggle: I realize that I should have bought a detector long ago! My main reason for buying it was because I have about 350' of the Overland Emigrant Trail running through some property I bought a couple years ago to retire on. Here is a little excerpt from a history page of the area it is located:

Chicago Park was Established in 1888 by investors in the Midwest, the lots were meant to attract successful gold miners. But when the parcels didn

Good luck on your purchase. I would get a bigger coil for doing big areas and a small 6 inch dd for small stuff depending if gold is present in the creek. Try panning in late fall before rains and snow hits. You never know where you might find it. As for the relics use the bigger coil and check any type of landmarks or large trees or rocks. If they had to ford the river when high then they might have lost stuff. Find that ford and use a waterproof coil downstream from it. Look for any cabins or sink holes for signs of people. Use small coil for trashy areas.

These guys should have selections of frequencies depending on soil conditions which are measurable with your machine

About what parts you out of?

Your 9" stock concentric coil will work in both locations, but just not quite as well as a DD coil will at your trail property. Why not just wait awhile longer, before buying another coil? By doing so and having gained more practical experience using the 705, with more research you might find that your detecting needs might be best met with coils other than what you have mentioned above.

Badbaja's post was the route I took upon making a decision to buy extra coils for the XT-70 to supplement its 9" stock coil. Bought a 10.5" DD coil for its depth and coverage and a 6" DD HF coil for its separation abilities, ability to hit on very small gold and for use in and around tot lots. Both coils have did very well for their intended purpose..

The deal on the coils I mentioned is hard to pass up, only because I know what they sell for new, but if they won't work on my targets with the type of soil I don't want to spin my wheels.

I guess what I am really looking for is what would work best in the red clay soil, it is very dense and like I mentioned is virtually watertight when wet, probably perfect for pottery! If it is red is that always a sign that it has a high iron content? The other surface stones and rocks on the property look like a serpentine, blueish in color.

DD coils will function much better in highly mineralized soil than concentrics. The good news is that a DD coil will work in moderate soil too. Just not quite the depth in moderate soil, and not quite as accurate TID. With that in mind, you wouldn't go wrong with either the elliptical DD at 18.75 kHz or the 10" DD at 18.75kHz. (you said 9-inch DD, but if it is a large DD, it will not be the 9-inch diameter).

In the subject of your post, your question was.............. just bought the 705 Now What?......... the next thing you need to do is plan on me coming out there to help you hunt that site! :poke: With temps in the single digits here the past few days, and the forecaster calling for another snow tomorrow, I'm ready to head to a warmer climate!

Seriously, read everything you can about the functionality of the detector and how it applies to your sites. Go back through these posts and search for topics that you may need a little more information on. Most of all, enjoy the hobby! :detecting: HH Randy

If you can get them cheap buy them all. You can always resell them to get some $ back if you don't like them. I think you will!

 You never know for sure though!! I don't think a lot of this trail has ever been hunted because so much of it is on private property in that district. I still have the cut in the hillside where it was, but it is all overgrown and if it was not called out on my plat map I would have thought it was just an old tractor trail.

I have downloaded and printed the entire e-book and put it in binder, I have read its entirety but it will take some time to grasp all the info. I keep it in my pack when I go hunting and have already referenced it when MD ing. Thanks for all your help.:beers:

Thanks for the advice Bart. I just contacted the seller. I can see now why so many people recommend your service!
