Where does one start with learning how to use excal ll. My last detector was a Detector Pro Wade ,very simple .Is sensitivity the Ground Balancing? All input would be helpful to speed up learning curve. Also I am in NE Ohio looking for a good scoop that is good in mud , gravel sand. Thanks Doc.

Line up some test targets, both good and bad and try and make mental mote of the difference in the tones. Then hit the water and dig everything until you cam tell tje difference between good and bad targets.

I'd start by looking at the two stickys at the top of this forum for the Excal. That will give you a good overview of the hardware and accesseries for it, and how various people have it configured for themselves. You're next step would be to read some initial controls setup that others prefer on the beach. I'm sure others will chime in and tell you how and why they like to set it up a certain way with the controls.

Hey Ron, that's why I think adding a quick initial setup guide/run down for the Excal and the Sovereign in those two model stickys would be a good idea, but both of those stickys are closed so nobody can do that. Nothing major, just a quick "set this to this" and why type of deal for both machines. Covereing how the sensitivity goes backwards on the Sovereign, how they should start out in Auto, to use band 2, keep notch and disc at zero, keep Iron Mask ON for best ability to pull coins out of iron (that confuses some people), and so on.

She auto gb, no matter where you are. I think its actually 3 settings that switch internally, but don;t know. Start by getting settings correct. Order a plugger straight shaft, if it needs warranty work send back in stock shaft.

Sensitivity as high as it will go stable. Disc, lowest possible. Iron makes machine go silent. I dig everything.

I also have rtg style scoop. 7" ss. Good for most conditions, except rocky areas. I think rocky spots are just hard anyway. PM me about scoop if you want one, although I am in ma an will not ship without payment first.

If you got a minelab duffel back with it, be very careful. It does not protect the machine. Don't drop it, at all. Don't leave it laying in sun. Don't let pets get near it. I am the only one who touches mine. You will need to do a few things to maintain it.

It breaks down easy enough for storage. Get silicone spray at a dive shop. Apply after every use on all cables. Gently remove coil cover when done, an clean sand. Gently. Do not epoxy coil cover on, sand still gets in there. Some cover with truck bed liner, thats pretty much ok. I usually charge battery 1 for 1 with use. Give or take. 6 hour hunt means a minimum 6 hour zap. Overcharging will fry battery.

I can't think of anything else really. Scoop I have is really nice. There are also lots of freindly sponsors that make different ones, mine is RTG. They all I use. hh an gl. -Joe

i have an excal 1000... i would recommend the following settings....... volume-3/4, discrimination -0 or 1 very minimal. theshold-just barely audible, sensetivity-as a newby you should probably run in auto or at about 2 oclock--if sensetivity is set too high you will get falsing .... run in discrimination mode..... thats it ,your set....to start out it would be best if you could find somewhere like a beach or private land where digging alot of holes is not am issue.... swing coil at a smooth casual pace and dig all repeatable signals...... ive had my excal a few years now and really dont stray very far from the above mentioned settings and ive had very good results...--good luck and be patient..... oh ya,dont forget to refill your holes

If you have a warranty bed liner spray is NOT ok..... i WILL void your warranty. You need to use your skid plate.... put epoxy on that if you wish. If you have to return it for repair..... you should have to send the shaft. Its a simple machine to use..... but you have to use it. its a fun machine to use.
