Just before I was asked to leave.

I've been hunting a city owned piece of land over the last two days. Found some clad and a Token the first, and had found some clad and a Penney today. Then while griding the field and older gent comes over. I thought he was going to ask the usual questions. He was cordial. Asked how I was doing, I responded and asked the same. He introduced himself and said he was the Grounds Keeper for the church across the street. That they had a long term lease with the city to use the land(the parking lot is city property too.) and he was trying to get the filed in shape for use as a flag football field. Although, he says, I was filling my hole,(an Under statement) he would appreciate my not digging there anymore. I said I'd go elsewhere. (Until I can call the city and find out for sure). My two best finds are pictured. I left out the clad and 1960 and 1961 Penney. The possibility for silver is good. I can only read the date 194? on the wheatie. The token, No date, so I don't know how old it is.

Nice finds buddy!
Will it ever end with people always thinking we are DIGGING holes!
My God!
We don't do any more damage than a darn squirrel would do looking
For his nuts! Hah

Check with City on that one BUT I'll bet they say the same thing right?

Go at night ingognito! Hahha

No matter how hard we try, we often times can not convince ground keepers that digging holes then filling them in is acceptable. Unfortunately, they manage the landscaping of such areas, and in larger cities communicate to other grounds keeps the problems they have with metal detectorists. Sometimes, the end result is a complete ban on sports fields.

PLEASE don't dig any holes in sports fields. Pinpoint the target location with your electric pinpointer, then use the end of a screwdriver to locate the target and pop it out. This method is actually much faster then using a digger, and allows you get many more coins/jewelry in a hunt. And DO show the groundskeeper all the junk you remove from the field.

On the positive side, you got some nice finds!

Well, most of the time I don't dig a hole, I remove a plug, find the coin and place the plug back. But, when it's dry that isn't always possible. Neither is locating a coin six inches down with a PRO pointer and popping it out with a screw driver. I've seen people try the screw driver. They do more damage looking for deep targets than I ever would. How do you remove an aluminum can with a screw driver?

My exact thoughts !
Imagine getting a key date BUT it isn't worth a thing
now that it's all gouged out from the screw driver!

I always carry a soda bottle cap with the broken glass attached in my junk pouch to show these guys. Also, ask the guy to please don't just tell half the story to his friends, i.e., that you were digging holes. The whole story is that the holes were filled in, tamped, and nearly impossible to find unless you are looking closely for them.

I carry a trenching shovel with the handle cut down. Why? Because it makes better plugs than my Lesche. Most of my digs can't be seen after I finish. Problem is, they seen the shovel, 4 inch wide blade, and imagine huge hole.

No.....I know my detector well enough that I can easily tell if it's a larger target. Just because there is a target showing 8" does not mean you have to dig it. A lot of this is perception, and a digger or modified shovel looks much more invasive then then a screwdriver or probe.

This whole hunting sports-fields with a screwdriver is more about keeping the groundskeepers happy and allowing others to also metal detect these in places then it is about what "what I want to do". I have been in this hobby for many many years and am an advocate for proper hunting techniques. I get tired of filling in other's holes and getting verbally blasted for holes I did not make.

Perhaps you might want to volunteer for this below. We spend hours trying to get parks back open for metal detecting.

Are you going to be part of the problem or part of the solution?

If I hunt a sports field it is off season, and I am extra careful to fill the hole. If too dry to make a plug I go elsewhere. Even though the field I was asked to leave was a ball field, the backstop had been removed, and the city had dug a huge hole in it. I still didn't dig on what would have been the ball field. I was finding more where the parents would be seated. I have hunted soccer fields during the off season. But usually found myself back where the spectators had been.
