it has this funny growth on it <IMG SRC="/forums/images/wink.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=";)"> This one is slightly larger than what I usually see in the woods. Don in South Jersey
 
They are used to make bowls and lamps because of their beauty and hardness.
I think they develop around scars
