Hello all,

I'm trading in my GTI 2500 towards a used SE, just reading about the various tones and settitngs is giving me cold feet but I plan on gowing slow and taking how ever much time is needed to get a handle on the Minelab. Since I started detecting, about three years ago, I've been going to dad's former home, built in 1845.

After about a year and a half of pounding the yard to the right of the house I managed four silver coins. 1945 Walker, two siler rosies and my first seated coin.

I'm convinced there are no more coins there but I was convinced of that before finding the seated and again before the last rosie so I really do know better. I'm certainly going to start out in factory settings but I can attest to the amount of square nails at this place. Can any one suggest any tweaks to be made in factory settings, if tweaks are possible, to help seperate the good stuff from the junk? I don't mind digging some trash there as it's the place where I grew up. I just don't want to leave anything on the table.

Thanks in advance, Steve in Eastern PA

Its hard to suggest unless you know the conditions. If there is a lot of nails like from years of shingle replacement you may have to hunt in All Metal and Ferr tones. Make sure it comes with a Pro coil. When working in trash... sometimes it just calls for a small coil. I like auto sensitivity 24 with a high gain of 9. It still gives you modulation of those 9 inch coins. Learn the smartscreen from the start... the digitial will is ok if you want to check a target but the numbers jumping around will drive you nuts. I always use Cond tones i prefer to hear iron bounce over bottle caps and can scread. Dig those repeatable targets until you lean what you are digging. If the SE says its a certain at half on the depth scale ... it right. Learn the tones because on deep targets they are the key to success. Dont be afraid to put the coil on the soil and push it along as apposed to swinging it like a fast recovery machine.
