Just a Thought.....

Thought I would shair this moment......This morning I drove out to the Cloyd Mountain Battle site for a little relic hunting. About five minutes into the hunt the X-Terra-70 gave me a very solid 32 at 10". I removed a 7" deep plug and laid it aside. I then removed the next layer of dirt from the hole and dumped it next to the hole. And there it was a nice 58cal. three ringer. As I stood there looking at the bullet I was think back to May the 9th 1864,144 years ago a Yankee soldier had loaded that bullet in his rifle and fired it at a fleeing Rebel soldier. That it had laid there in the ground for a 144 years for me to find it. How can one not love this hobby.

That's one of the things I like most too, just the absolute wonder of it.

Very nice find! i enjoyed your story also. It really makes you wonder when you see a sighr like that. Thanks for the post and picture, Beale.

Excellent reminder as to why many of us do what we do! I started out in this hobby hoping to strike the mother load of old coins. And the first few years I was content with trying to fill the old nail apron on each outing. But as time went on, I became aware that every target tells a story. I don't have access to military battle grounds around here. But even when out coinshooting an old homestead site, I pause and think about each target I dig, contemplating the circumstances as to how it became lost. Thanks for sharing your recovery (and story) from the Cloyd Mountain Battle site. HH Randy

Hey Digger, I started out prospecting thinking it would be a lot easier than it was. As I dug junk, I kept it all (except the car I found in a landfill) and dragged much of it home with me to clean. Even the nails. But I was interested in the story behind each coin, bullet, nail (and nugget) I dug up. I think it's a very interesting pursuit since there's a little bit of a thrill to think you're the first person to look upon these things since they were dropped there.

Tom's bullet is particularly interesting and I'd honestly hate to think about how much damage a slug like that would cause to a person in battle.
The history about the things we dig up is interesting. Even a stupid ring-pull tab from a soda can had me reminiscing. Those things were discontinued here in the late 70s. How time marches on.

A scenic lookout with a view of the ocean at the back of a field against a stone wall (fence).

The four objects found in a 10 ft circle.

A brass Royal Navy button, possibly an officers button as I cannot find an exact one online. Many of my people served in the British forces.

A Newfoundland 10c 1945 in very good condition. The site is in Newfoundland.

A broken bra strap.

A 303 bullet.

What happened. Which ones belong together.

The reason the site caught my eye. A few recent beer cans in the grass. Nothing else modern.

TomB, good story, what coil were you using on the XT-70 for relics? I would think you could use a round 14" DD for the XT-70 for relics if they made one.

nero, keep the ring pull-tabs as they are a collectors item, as you say discontinued in the late 70's.
