Many of you will get new detectors for Christmas. ( First Time Owners)

Some of you will find your way here to the Findmall Forum. That is your second best move. First was getting a detector

Read the instructions, understand as best you can what you are reading. Check here on the forum under the heading of your type detector..or in this forum metal detecting. A lot of useful information can be gotten here.

Ask question, we will give you the best of our abilities answer.

Do not get discouraged. It takes time to learn how to detect properly. You have to ( A MUST) learn your detector.

Learn the terms of the literature..Discrimination, Ground balance, Sensitivity.. what each means and what each does.

Air test your detector..if metered machine learn what a dime reading is, a quarter, a penny. a nickle.. and yes trash items.

It's a great hobby..it's not hard to learn how to do it..but it takes some practice. Don't give up...

Good advice Elton!------I would just ad--right at the top of that list that any "newbie" LEARN PROPER RECOVERY TECHNIQUES..-----How the area(s) is left after a detecting session is going to be the decideing factor if ANY of us will have places to detect in the future.--------Del

Glad you added that fine Sir.

:usaflag:I bought myself a detector for Christmas. In the form of a Minelab Explorer SE Pro !! My other detetctor is an Ace 250, with which I have found some great stuff by the way. Just sick of digging up so many nails.

like you..the iron digs was many, many, I switched to the Tek T2..and still get sensational depth and very little iron targets. No I'm not saying "NONE" just far less than with the Se. I could never master the ability to know which, was which, on the targets high shrill pitch with the Se. Their an awesome detector, and one only needs to read the Minelab forum to verify that. Bryce Has mastered it along with many others. So it can be done. I do think it takes better hearing than I seem to have. Keep working on it, and I'm sure you too will make some sensational finds with your SE.

Have a nice Christmas Smitty.......

My point of this post is............... New people who do get that first time detector will need to learn it, or it will sit in the closet like so many others do.

If we can help just one learn how to somewhat use it..they will get better and enjoy out chosen hobby.

So when we see the questions and we can give the answer..Lets all pitch in and help out.

I just checked the big red bag.....it's empty of detectors.. "Sorry " LOL:rofl:

Iron targets are visual when using Ferrous mode, IM 22 and the smart screen, but that is probably water under the bridge.

Most iron will be on the left side under the mask and rusty iron like bottlecaps will put the cursor in the bottom right corner. If a newbie with an SE just digs the upper right hand corner targets, he will do very well indeed and advanced techniques will come with experience. The SE Pro is one of my favorite machines.

If you do encounter a nail as a good target, (seldom in ferrous mode) it will most often pinpoint off center from where you detected it. (off of the pointed end) This will be true for most all detectors.

Merry Christmas to all and thanks for all of the thought provoking posts you contribute throughout the year Elton.....

Did Elton just say its NOT HARD TO LEARN HOW TO DO IT? I think another good piece of advice is to find someone in your area that has and knows the detector your are using and let them help you with the learning curve. They normally know where to find the old stuff and can show you how to dig and what to dig or avoid. NEVER SELL A DETECTOR UNTIL ITS PAID FOR ITS SELF.... by then you know if its for you. Get out there and use it... you wont learn it if you only hunt once a month.

It amazes me how many people I have talked to that own very capable detectors but they sit in the closet because they went out a few times and either found nothing or just dug junk and got discouraged. Best advice I can give is join a metal detecting club if there is one in a reasonable distance. Lots of experience resources available to point a new commer in the right directions.
