Just a short note to save time and be more efficient for park hunting.

After the first search of the year off the bench and into the real world I need to make adjustments.I use different metal detectors and thought getting down to one pin pointer would be a good idea. The S-1 was sold last season(like selling my saddle) and I used a Whites bulls eye,Garrett Pro Pin pointer and again another PistolProbe. My hunt last week a PistolProbe was used and found it just had too many negatives, not loud enough to hear with headphones on,too much cross talk no matter how far the coil was placed from this probe, just plain clumsy to use.The S-1 eliminates another item strapped on your belt, saves time one flip of the switch from the handle and it is much quicker than reaching for the holster.Yes Virginia, its much better than your Garrett Pro pin pointer if you are going to use a Sovereign the S-1 will make life more pleasant in the field.Anyway I have a S-1 coming from Ralph in a couple of days and looking forward for my Virgina hunt with my brothers.HH Ron

I didn't like the bulk of those Sunray probes on my Explorers nor the weight. The Pro Pointer is a perfect 10 to me. I also don't like discriminating probes 'cuz when I get down I'm digging any and all metal from a hole. Could be a coin behind a nail. Also always forgot to flip the switch back. On my left hip I can remove and use my Pro Pointer with my left hand only where as I needed two for the Sunray and got the machine more muddy than it would be otherwise.

Those S-1 on the Sovereign are the best probes hands down, found me some of those deep coins I never would have found with any of the other probes, well I guess my Uni Probe headphones would have too. By Using the disc of the Sovereign with probe I could pick out the good targets in with the trash if I wanted or could use it in all metal and pinpoint right down to the exact spot. I used mine in all metal most of the time as once I pinpointed with the Sovereign in all metal PP I would just turn on the probe and if I felt it was less than 3 inches deep I would run the probe over that area and locate in and use my long thin screwdriver to pop it out. Now if it was a weaker and deeper I would dig a plug as i know it was deeper and possibly older and go into the hole with the S-1 in all metal to find the exact location of my target as it seem to work better on deeper targets in all metal. Targets were easy to find so didn't have to do as much digging when you know the exact spot it is. Now if it was a iffy one and could be a iron false which some of the deep one are I would use the all metal pinpoint and when I got a decent signal I would switch to disc to see if it was good or bad and could also see if there was a good target close to iron also, worked great for me and sure saved a lot of time on recovery.
Now it cost more, but I also have a Uni Probe that is built into the headphones for my detectors I try out and for those Ralph don't make a probe for and find this one too is great as it has a smaller probe to get into areas, has slightly more depth which is good, but not as easy to use, it is a all metal probe so you don't have the disc if needed. Mine seems to get the toggle switch bumped when moved in the car so the battery is dead many times when i go out, so I have to make sure I carry a extra one with me. On the newer Uni Probe the toggle switch was turned a different way and prevent lot of what I was seeing. Now if I couldn't have my Sun Ray Probes or my Uni Probe than the Garrett Pro probe would be my next choice as it is a great probe and reasonable price, but can not do what the Sun Rays or the Uni Probes can do, but better than anything else I have seen or used.

Critterhunter,I have used the X-1 Sunray probe with my Explorer's.The X-1 on the Explorer and S-1 installed Sovereign are two different animals. With the performance difference, weight and balance of the Explorer I would probably choose the Garrett. The Sovereign with a S-1 works much better and efficient I would compare it with going to a S rod asm to a straight rod its that much difference. The switch is next to the handle no wind or outside noise to distract. You really have to try the S-1 on a Sovereign to see the difference.I would prefer the cheaper price, but the S-1 is a product that's worth the extra cost and will save time and help with finds in the long run.The Sunray S-1 is more expensive and harder to find for a reason. Rick,Ralph said this one was the last S-1 he had in stock and needed to finish this S-1 before shipping. These probes are now shorter to save weight 6 inches instead of nine.He explained there is a different probe mount from the older models. Thanks Ron

So am I assuming that these are a newer type S-1? I was in the market for one and would call an order one from Sunray.I was just thinking of doing it. But if they are a little smaller I would really do it. steve

Another thing about the Garrett probe is it goes haywire on wet sand on the beach, the S-1 is not affected at all. I also use the pocket uniprobe(i have 2) that is not affected either and is the deapest of them all, i have also tried the pistolprobe but it detects almost the full length of the probe rather than just the tip like the S-1 and uniprobe so for me is not as good/accurate.

In hot ground I turn on the ProPointer with it's tip touching the ground and it will keep it from falsing, although that is rare to happen.

Kered,I have tried all the probes and find the S-1 and Sovereign the best combination. The new Probe I have coming from Ralph is lighter which may make it even better.HH Ron

Had a Pistol Probe and it drove my Minelabs crazy. The Garrett pinpointer is the best hand held in my opinion but it hits on every nail pulltab bottlecap and anything else in the hole. All I'm interested in is the target my detector located and the Sun-Ray does that push the pin-point button on deep targets and retrieve your target and move on. Whatever a person likes is fine but my choice by far is the Sun-Ray. HH :minelab:

Hershey, the Sunray is hard to beat.I think the Garrett Pro pin pointer is one of the best handheld units also.HH Ron
