I have a small tool bag for my gear, which now is a good time to go through and access my gear. This bag has my headphones digging tools, extra battery packs and trash aprons. Also my site maps for my searches should have a priority list.Maybe this year I'll travel out of my comfort zone and check out some new sites.LOL hopefully these resolutions will be kept.I'm going to be positive and look forward to a great season.HH Ron

I'm ready but I don't have any earth shattering strategies. I like going to pounded places in hopes of squeaking one more keeper out of it. I won't pass up a new spot
but finding a keeper in a pounded spot is almost like the Vikings finally winning a play-off game. Being retired now I will have a-lot more time to enjoy this wonderful hobby.
HH Gary

I have a few new coils to try out a couple of private farm fields to detect very old land and plenty of beaches to hunt this year now iam retired . Right now it is 17* with winds gusting to 50mph!!! if Gold coins where laying on the ground i would not even try lol . Soon we all can hunt . HH Jim

Gary,I retired from GM in 2008 and sometimes work harder with less time.Enjoy your retirement but stay active new adventures more time for important tasks.I feel sometimes we work an area too long and need to hunt new places. Good Luck HH Ron

Jim,gold coins! LOL I'll suit up and hunt.Hopefully a couple seeded hunts.I really enjoy the outdoors in a good park searching with the Sovereign.I do use my Explorer some the 1235X will be used for the seeded events this summer. Thanks Ron

Hi Ron,
New strategy for me is the S5, coinsearch and the S12 at the same old places I have been hunting. Never used these coils yet as I just purchased them recently. Maybe I will venture to a few new spots but mostly going to stick close to home. Gas prices will be sky high once again (the gas prices are high now at $3.85 (lowest grade) and probably close to $4.00 + again by summer) and I need to keep balance ( in my checking account lol ) I am also going to try and hunt more with the control box hooked to the shaft. Although I do like to hipmount BUT it pulls on my pants too much and starts to pull them down lol. I know these hunting spots are well worn and beaten by detectors but I am going with the thought that no site is ever hunted out. I am also going to really concentrate on all the areas that are littered with tons of junk. No cherry pickin' for me but with patients I may just pull a keeper or two. I'll keep you posted - Jim

My season never ended. In New England some of the oldest coins 1600's can be found atat the beaches. In saying that, I will be checking my gear bag out as well for mythe inland sites.

Good Luck guys with all your new equipment and strategies.....And Gary n Jim with the retirement, Con-grads!!, I'm in day 7 of mine and it's like a dream, A true Blessing.

Excited about The Skullies, Will be using them all summer, along with a few other hunters, I think they are a great advancement in Waterproof headphones. In testing them over the last month they have netted me a few great finds, several silver rings, and a King George III counter stamped Copper/Gold coin, bad condition but a first for me.

The Chesapeake Bay, and OC Maryland will be my main targets this year. Been researching the bay for a few years now...77 POI (Points of Interest).....

" Gook Luck " Ron... you have the right attitude and I'm betting you'll persevere and post some interesting & rewarding treasures.

OBN, Congratulations on your retirement again. I retired at 55, ( 11 years ago ) , and there isn't enough time in the day to do all the things I like to do....you are going to be the same way and enjoy every minute of it. GL&HH

38 deg C (100 deg F) here this week with busfires. God help us when the warm weather starts in 4-6 weeks

Pete down under.

Jim,yea the gas cost is a big factor with travel. My plan is to detect more on errands or trips. One trip to Virginia I stopped at parks in Ohio and West Virginia, was fun and was nice too take a break from the drive.I use the Tornado 800 coil mostly and have other detectors to feed, just spent 170.00 for guts to an Explorer ll LOL there went the money for my 13" Sovereign coil. Thanks Ron

fsa46,your confirmation is correct enjoy life.I've worked hard and now its time to coast a little. With the horses there is always work at the farm but that's a passion. Thanks Ron

Oldbeechnut,I hope you enjoy your retirement, yelp, there are still problems, but most are self inflicted.I always try to keep things simple.Good Luck Ron

Jason, most of us have to get cabin fever for a couple of months. You're blessed to be able to continue without harsh winter weather.Never hurts to recheck the pack or bag. Thanks Ron

Ron, usually I hunt just as much in the winter as I do in the summer. More in fact, because I hate the heat and will only water hunt or in the shade on super hot days, but in the winter I head for the woods while the brush and weeds and grass are died back or flattened from prior snow. Also don't have to worry about ticks in the winter so I don't mind pushing my way through brushy areas and working them as much as I can. Mostly though I hunt old tree growth areas where brush and weeds can't grow due to limited light. In the summer if it's too hot to hunt in the sun I'll head for the woods but only hit those old growth areas where the weeds/brush won't be too thick. Love spots like that.

Plus, in the winter I often find even if the mowed park grass is covered with snow or the ground frozen solid, often the ridges/ravines in spots will be bear of snow due to the wind which kept it from settling there, and also the ground won't be frozen because of decaying leafs/vegetation. The grown in mowed grass might be rock hard but the woods will have unfrozen ground sometimes. Having worked outside in my own business for years, I always said I can dress for the cold but can't do much about the heat. Dress right and the cold weather is some of the most comfortable hunting time I see year round and has it's perks too by getting access to some spots too thick in the summer.

I've got about 4 or 5 of my own new spots in the hopper right now to try this spring. A few of these are private land of old friends I've been meaning to hunt for a while. Another new guy to our circle has also secured us some major private property spots to hunt with him. I've also got a few "word of mouth" research leads to check out from talking to older friends. Got at least two great leads of potential hot spots long since abandoned in the woods that I can't wait to check out. Then there are all the old wood spots I hunted over the years but never with my GT. Me and a few friends that worked those spots I found got some great stuff out of them, but we were using non-Minelabs back then, and we all know how the Sovereign can make a "dead" spot new again due to it's legendary abilities and depth and also with some fantastic factory and aftermarket coil choices.

Also looking forward to some more water hunting this year. Did it here and there over the years with land machines wading knee deep, but only in the last year or two with the GT being chest mountable I've got more serious about it and made some good finds. With the Plano waterproof box I plan to throw my GT into on a snap on back shaft extension for water hunting this year, now I can go as deep as my Excalibur friends and don't have to stay in the shallow "kiddie pool" side of the beach so to speak.

Now that money is permitting some "frivolous" spending, besides picking up a few coils I've been wanting, today I just gave my truck a major tune up. Hadn't really done it since I bought it used a few years ago, and when I saw my gas mileage really starting to fall here I figured I can't wait to spring to do the tune up I was planning. So anyway, did various things and others like cleaned the throttle body and MAF sensor. Still need to clean the carbon out of the IAC solenoid, and later today I'm changing the original plugs and wires. I pulled one plug just to check and man it was worn out with a huge gap. No wonder my gas mileage has went into the dumpster over the last few months! Even these platinum factory plugs need changed at around 100,000 miles. My truck has 110,000 miles on it so it was due.

Anyway, reason I brought the whole thing up is that I too plan to do some traveling this year. Got a few people in nearby states who want me to visit for some hunts, and also have some hot leads on some private "friends-of-friends" land about 100 miles south of me that I need to go detect too. Yes, I'm excited, so wanted to get the truck in good shape for that and also now that I've been doing a lot of driving for work. Only a few more things I have to do to this truck later today to give her a complete tune up and preventive maintenance type deal. I don't know about you guys, but I get a big kick out of doing that sort of thing, especially when I know how much money I'm saving over having a garage do it. Most of this stuff is simple if people only knew how much money they'd be saving by just taking a few hours to do a few simple things.

Either way, point is....Yea, seems I've got more potential hot spots, both private and public, to hunt this year than I've ever had. Although I love the winter hunting, can't wait for those nice warm summer lazy days with a cool breeze hunting in a T-shirt and shorts. Nothing like that this side of heaven, that's for sure....Good luck to everybody in your spring endeavors....It's a great time of year to start a-new in life....Things have really been looking up for me lately and I thank God for blessing me and hope he'll continue to do so...Doing what I love and always wanted to do and now life is good and God willing will only get better...

Critter, its good you can get out this time of year. The ground here at this point doesn't permit a hunt without a jack hammer.I agree its always nice to meet up with others and search new areas.Price of fuel will continue to be a problem that we all have to work around.I used a motorcycle while back to save gas,but felt my equipment was exposed. The backpack and saddle bags are inconvenient never enough room for my gear. Thanks Ron

I've already kinda started. But, really ready to start full-time as this will be my first full year with the GT.

I am very lucky and thankful that I live in the south. Had enough of that snow and Ice growing up that when I retired from the Navy in 1978 I had no desire to move back North. I have been trying to get out a couple of times a week as of late. No great finds to report but finding clad, junk jewelry and of course the usual dose of pull tabs and aluminum bits and pieces. I have been retired for six years and wonder how I ever had time to work. I have been working some ball field complexes, City Parks and an occasional trip to the beach. Last time at the beach it appeared that sand had been moved from the dunes and deposited on the beach as targets were very few and very far between. With turkey season just about a months away in Ga I will have to take a trip and see if I can call a bird in for my son. Of course I will take my detector along and use it in the afternoons while my Son works.
