Jumping in with f-5

BrianNH

New member
Well I decided to get f5 over AT Pro and Omega.
Price had a big factor, reviews and videos were all great.

Did not see the need for an AT Pro, don't see myself water hunting.
The Omegas I inquired about was already sold or they wanted to much money.

Please be patient with me, as I'm sure I will have many questions.
Thanks, Brian

Good choice. The f series are extremely capable machines, possibly underrated for their capabilities.
Be patient with the learning curve it will well reward your patience.

I've had my f5 for about 9 months now and I wouldn't trade it for any machine , depth is excellent with my 11" DD coil and separation of target is also exceptional. Battery life with the two 9 volt batteries is unbelievable (40 hours plus). I bought my used for 250$ off my bother so I also got a super good deal. Feel free to send me a pm on the forum if you have any specific questions.

Don't give him your setup numbers, there won't be any silver coins left to hunt anywhere. Just kidding, you may want to pass your setup numbers on to him, they have worked well for you so I would say that would be a good place to start.

"BrianNH" there is some basic starter settings for the F5 (except for ground balance) that are universal enough in average or normal conditions that will get you going and with excellent results. I gather you don't have the detector yet, so, while your waiting I'm sure my brother SL52 will see your F5 thread and drop in with a reply. He got his F5 from our older brother (Ron) and what Ron did was just work out some VERY good "get started settings" and that's how SL52 started off and it worked so well that that's where he pretty much starts out at and then make subtle adjustments as needed. Many people get a machine like the F5 and they over think it. I've not looked in the manual for the F5 in a while but it most likely will give you some quick startup settings, those are very good for just finding coins at average depths and for starters that's a good thing to do.
Remember, High gain and threshold settings will most times cause a chatty or unstable detector, a season user can often times run them into the noise range, but a new user is confused with all the noise. Start off right and work your way up, if you start off with extra hot settings then you will most likely just want to wrap the detector around a tree and just give up!
MAX settings are at the point of being stable enough for the user to operate it and know what the detector is saying, not just MAX at the control or the menu. Many times the max settings are limited by Larger coils and not so much as with smaller ones, what I'm saying is that controls are just that "Controls" and in most cases the controls has a range above what they can be set at for many different environments, conditions, and accessories being used.

Keep it simple and you'll do fine.

F5 came in today. now I have to get a pro pointer and a sand scoop. We will be going up north to check on our camp this weekend, with is not far from Wells beach Maine. That's were my wife wants to try it out first.
Anyone suggest setting for beach hunting settings. this may sound dumb but, do you ground balance on beach sand?

Nah..I dont GB....just fire it up and go full power!...Or at least a setting you can live with and understand...dig everything on the beach for a while...or always...those small foil and iron signals hold some pretty cool gold things generally passed over by more experienced detectorists..run a stable setting where the metal signals 'ping' on you without a lot of falsing..you will find something for sure if you run a stable program and dont worry about depth, GB, and all that... Report back with pictures please...
