Jumped on the Gold Bug wagon

I traded some of my relics off Friday and was looking at getting an A/T Pro detector (can I say that here?). Well after seeing the A/T in action in a demo at the store, I wasn't that impressed to be honest with you. Yeah it has some nice features but the build quality wasn't what I expect a $500+ machine to be and although it had decent air testing capabilities, I wasn't that impressed either. Luckily the dealer also had a Gold Bug which I wanted to look at. It only had the 5" coil on it, but the Gold Bug with 5" coil was air testing a minie ball better than the bigger coil on the A/T Pro. The last VLF detector I owned was the F75 which I no longer have, but I really liked that machine. The Gold Bug reminded me of it of course, and I really liked it from the time I picked it up.

Needless to say, I left with a Gold Bug on order. I got one with the 11" coil so it had to be ordered, he only had one with the 5". So I have some questions for you guys. Those of you that have ran an F75 or T2, and have the Gold Bug. Do they behave similarly in the ID area? What I mean is, I did the videos on the F75 where it would read minie balls as iron in the ground, especially if they were deep or if the ground was red clay/heavy iron oxide. I'm wondering if the Gold Bug is going to be the same way or if they have fine tuned it a bit since its considered a machine for gold prospecting. I also hear this machine works really good in iron trash which is exactly why I got the machine...depth is good but ability to work around in trash is why I got it. I'm running a Minelab GPX 5000 for depth but since they don't make a small coil for it and it being a PI machine, it's hard to hunt with it in trashy sites without a brain overload in audio. The Gold Bug will be my run and gun machine for scouting new sites and working trashy ones. Just trying to get a good heads up on it for relic hunting from those that have them.

Congrats on your Gold bug. I have one too and am very happy with it.

I woyuld get that 5 inch coil for your bug as well if you are working really trashy areas.
Good luck with your relic hunting!

i don't think you will be disappointed the bug is fast and loves round things i use mine for junked out areas and it picks the coins out very well hope this helps?

its disc and speed are what make it so good but did take me a bit to get used too but am glad i persevered excellent machine but don't tell anyone!! just off to check a park down the road that my parents just told me had a camp on it from WW2 US guys where here too so who knows whats there? i know it hasn't been filled like every other park around here as it has some huge big gum trees on it and they would be 100's of years old so fingers crossed for some goodies:fisher:

Hey Daniel --

I'm not a relic hunter, but I owned a Fisher F-70 (very similar to the F-75), and now own the Gold Bug Pro with 11" coil. I will tell you that at least on coins, the Gold Bug VDI is MUCH more accurate -- even on deep coins -- than my F-70 was. I did not like how, similar to what you said with minie balls, my F-70 would ID deep coins as iron. The Gold Bug Pro does NOT do that on coins. It ID's them well.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised, and very happy, with your purchase.

One hint -- if you want EXTRA depth, run it in all-metals mode. Its depth in disc. mode is very good, but in all-metals mode? WOW.

Steve

Sounding good to me! I always ran the F75 in all metal, so when I tested the Gold Bug and A/T I put them both in all metal. The 6" GPX coil is a mono style...iron disc only works with DD coils on the GPX so it really wouldnt help. THANKS folks!!

Great choice, its hard to beat a GB. Also for your GPX you can run coils for the whites TDI. I have a 6 x 10 Jimmy Sierra eliptical dual mono for the whites TDI and it runs fine on the GPX5000.

Daniel, I recently (a couple of days ago) sold my F75LTD and kept my Teknetics G2 ( same as the Gold Bug Pro). I use both both alternately to hunt for Civil War relics in my West Tennessee town which was near a major battleground. The Tek G2 seems to ID more accuratey at depth and also tone ID is more accurate at depth. If I speed up my sweep speed a bit, it will give me a good reading for those deep 3 ringers and sharps carbine solid base bullets. But long story short: I kept my G2 and sold my F75 LTD (at a substantial loss I might add). Found several deep Indian Heads and silver dimes with the G2 as well.
One thing that I liked better about the F75: long battery life!!! It was amazing. The g2 seems to run through the little 9volts (the little rectangle batteries) after a couple of trips but I hunt for about 6 hours on each trip. I hope my palaver was helpful. Kevin

hi steve!
do you get (v.d.i) on the g2/g.b. in "all metal" mode?
pretty sure ya do!..just curious!

theres a speedo up top so not as accurate but gives a look in within 5 points or so can always switch to disc for more accurate numbers if needed?

AJ

j.t. --

It's like amberjack said -- you don't get a "digital number" ID; when you are in all-metals mode, the digital readout switches over to being your ground phase. HOWEVER, you do get ID info -- up at the top of the screen, along that "speedometer dial." It is accurate, but I think what amberjack may mean is that it is not a single number. For instance, if you hit a penny, that might give you a VDI of 83 in disc. mode -- and then if you switch to all-metals mode, the "speedometer dial" readout might "blacken in" the area from 81 to 85...something like that. Does that make sense?

Steve

no probs J.T

i am trying to discourage people from buying a G2 / Bug the less around the more stuff for me :lmfao:

i do think its the best kept secret just from reading other forums most don't even know the exist which is great for us bug owners it takes a bit to get the hang of ask Steve i was going to bin mine until i worked out how good it is. :clapping:

no sorry JT never used one but i found the vid's in the topic very intersting. the Teknetiks G2 is the same as the gold bug

I've found over $350.00 with mine since March of this year and 6 silver rings, 3 gold rings and some silver coins.

If you hear them say the Gold Bug Pro is crap, point them to me and I'll tell them otherwise ! :hot:

There is no way to tell if this detector or that detector can find more coins. Each detector has its good and bad points. Talk to Bart about the etrac, since I do not have one I will not speak for the etrac. But I will tell you this I hunted behind one and picked up, all the coin he could not ID due to another target ie (pull tabs and sideways nickel's, can slaw) either on top of the coin or beside it. I am not brand loyal either. But this is a great all purpose detector there is on the market.

Since getting the GB Pro, my nickel finds have been well over $1.00 per hunt, on a good day (2 - 3 hours hunting) I can come home with over $1.50 in nickels alone ! (See the pics below for my nickel finds for the last 3 weeks !)

My quarter numbers have stayed the same as when I was using my F5. Dimes and pennies have been the same too. With the F5 I was lucky to find 3 or more nickels in that time !

Having not used an E-trac, I can not compare it to the GB Pro.

Oh, and my GB Pro was purchased from Cabela's too, it has version 3 software in it and works like the Pro model and not like the original GB that had version 2 or 2.9 software in it.

thanks for the reply!..your input is appreciated!
