:jump:Is This Noise Supposed to Happen?

Pepper54

New member
My husband just got his Explorer SE and has been practicing with it. He says that when a signal is received, many times there is a THUNK sound after the coil passes the target.

Is this normal?

What causes the sound?

Thanks,

I have heard the thunk sound many times with the ex xs but am not sure what it is,,,,,,I think some times it is more than one signal trying to sound off....or shallow objects(more than one) sounding off.. or was it deep signals?..I think you should ask Charles(upstateNY) to answer this one...seems to me he has mentioned this before....sorry not much help but hey...its a start....I love this hobby and if I can, I am always willing to try to help....

That particular one is generally a collocated target with trash. Examples being: a button with an iron or lead backing, a silver coin with a nail not to far away, a coin very deep in heavy mineralized soil, a very rusted nail in very damp soil, or a coin just barely out of the reach of proper ID (just really flipping deep). The real question is whether the high pitched, good tone repeats when you turn and swing your coil over it from say an east to west direction after you just swept it form a north to south direction. If it repeats (high tone) in both directions you had better get to digging.:detecting:

Just had another thought.....if he has fast selected...thats what happens....I normally run with deep on only just so I don't have to hear a quick thunk or chirp....or ping .etc...just a thought....

Thanks for all your messages.

He found that if he turns the gain setting all the way down, the thumping noise goes away. Any ideas?

He also found this faint thumping noise occurs when he pushes any command buttons on the machine.

The gain may be intensifying the mineralization signal of the soil, I rarely run my gain higher than 7 as it makes the machine run a little to hot, false and chop signals, and I like to be able to tell the depth of my targets. At a gain setting lower than 5, your deeper, weaker, smaller signals will become very faint. That is not a terrible thing as long as you're still able to hear and distinguish them.

I get that same sound, with me it is more times than not a pulltab with the beavertail folded over making a thicker piece on one end.

I just had it happen again by me putting it in auto sens. it seemed to thunk alot....I had sens. all the way up and then pressed the middle button on the left of smart screen and it went into auto mode....and it thunked alot....sometimes you can push the auto mode button and not even relize it.....you can tell by a line which circles around the sens. number on the display.

I believe the thunk you're hearing is a signal that is being discriminated out. Try all-metal mode and see if it doesn't go away.

well my machine dont thunk or clunk...NEVER has.. so for those of you that are having that problem..maybe ya ought to have it looked at because it has never ever happened to mine...
