Joining the minelab posse

Just mailed a money order for a used excalibur 1000 it has the yellow headphones. The guy i got it from is a Find mall member and said
everything was A,O.K and got a good deal also. To bad the water is getting cold up here in CT dont think i want to take the plunge. But can't wait to try it out.

How often are the seals replaced on these units? should i have them replaced? or the detector checked by at minelab?

Also any newbie advice would be appreciated. Well let start reading some of the old posts.

Thanks, Epi

Buy a wet suit Still plenty of time I just got out of lake Ontario NY couple days ago using a 5 mil and I live in SWF I would not mess with it or worry about the seals or anything else. If the machine works now hunt it till it stops

Hi EPI,

I too bought a used detector, and it appears the seals are built to last a good while. This unit is probably 5 years old (Excal 800). Take a look at Youtube.com for "Surfdigger" videos. He has 8 tips out for water hunting, plus you will see a ton of others. Here is a link to #1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1ejCC2-ivE Some good, some not so good. I am reading two books by C. J. Clynick. "Water Hunting": Secrets of the Pros and Advanced Methods for Finding Gold in the Water with the Minelab Excalibur. The first one..... boring....but, I'm more of a "Johnny don't read" kind of guy. The second book is much better, and written better, and has more info on how to tune your Excal. NEVER are there exact, Put Knob "X" at number 3, Knob "Y" at number 5. There are always starting points hinted around. His main thing is learning as you go on your own speed and own abilities. Conditions are always changing, and so should your "Threshold" setting.
Good Luck!

When I reconditioned my friend's Excal I took the rubber gasket off the battery plug area and cleaned the trapped sand/dirt out of there, then I greased that rubber gasket with some dielectric grease, which won't break down rubber or silicon, helps insure good battery lead contacts (so long as it's only put on as a film on the metal plug terminals to avoid oxide build up), and the grease also helps to form a more water tight seal of the gasket when greased on both sides. I also took a wrench and snugged the cable connector nuts (don't over tighten!), and I'm glad I did that because the one going to the headphones was real loose. Inspect the bottom and sides of the coil. If they weren't using a coil cover like my friend it may have splits in it where the seams start coming apart. I sprayed his coil with about 10 or 12 coats of spray on bed liner to fill this splits and also to insure against future wear.

The video was good. I have a couple of books by C. J. Clynick. They are very good reads. I would like to get a couple more.
