I decided to try a Red Racer for turf gold jewelry hunting and got a great deal on a Pro Pack. As a shallow water I hunt by ear so am not interested in notch discrimination as on the Racer 2. I feel using discrimination beyond iron causes the missing of gold jewelry. My intent is to use the Racer on the beach, salt and fresh where scooping/digging is easier anyway. The Racer seems to be pretty sensitive to gold range targets and in videos works pretty good in wet salt sand. I like how fast responding the Racer is and how simple it is to use. Well made, lightweight, good balance... I should be able to cover ground with this detector and have the large coil on the way. I'm willing to compromise a bit in the wet salt sand to get the better small gold sensitivity of the Racer. So I'm looking forward to trying the Racer in the field. I plain like the machine at this point!

I do have a concern though. At my home and test garden so far, the Racer seems overly sensitive and I can only run sensitivity up to 74 before overloading. But even at 74, the Racer is very noisy so sensitivity has to be reduced below 70. No matter what I do the Racer is noisy from EMI/ground. At reduced sensitivity around 60 I can live with the noise. My other land machines overcome whatever EMI via Noise Cancel and one can nearly run at max sensitivity! With reduced sensitivity on the Racer, it's really no better than my 2 other land detectors at hitting a US Clad .25 cent buried at close to 13 inches. The Racer actually takes 3rd place on this target, because of the extra noise my other machines do not make and at reduced sensitivity there is no VDI on the Racer, while the other machines lock on. I've tested many machines at my home outside over the years and never has a detector reacted this bad to EMI.

This is by no means a complaint as I actually like the rawness of the Racer. I just hope though when I get in the field with the Racer I will not have to be reducing sensitivity all the time. I think the Racer shines with higher sensitivity, but at reduced sensitivity will lose it's edge? I've seen videos of the Racer running quiet set at high sensitivity at a wet salt beach. So Racer users, what sensitivity range are you running in the field?

I personally just switch on , ground balance and off i go. I find the performance more than good without adjusting a single thing! You can loose targets with too much sensitivity when in trashy areas.

I'll have to try that and see how performance compares. I think I saw 1 video where the Racer ran quiet at 90 sensitivity wet salt sand! I just hope EMI will not be a problem half the time in the field? I'm guessing it won't. Just received the big coil and it looks good. Plan on using it on beaches to see how it compares to my WOT set up.

sea hunter, I agree as far as depth its not better than most detectors, but what you will find is , its better at separation, and will amaze yu . I was going to get the R-2 but disided to stay with the Red as it works fine for me and is doing well , I can also tell you it like s small jewelry and at good depth . now try it out on your hunted out spots it may surprise you

I am waiting to join the club, my Racer 2 is coming straight from Makro to my door. Hopefully not too much longer...nod nod wink wink:wave:

Grats!

I tried the red Racer in my tot lots but it was just too noisy for me. The Racer 2 is so much quieter and stable. I can run Gain up to 95 without any noise issues.

Wonder what makes the 2 quieter? Less sensitivity? Different frequency? Notch discrimination? I do not mind ground noise if performance is gained. I did see a video online where the R2 was quieter in heavy iron, but still wanted the simpler R1. I almost forgot what attracted me to this machine in the first place... recovery speed and sensitivity to gold jewelry and the ability to work pretty good in wet salt sand for a single frequency machine. Right, I started getting caught up in depth, where my own success has come from coverage and finding the gold one can find. So good enough depth with the Racer is good enough for my need.

In my yard it's the EMI setting off the Overload when sensitivity is pushed to 75. I think my EMI comes and goes during the day and I will have to test Racer at different times. Not sure what's causing the interference, but I've turned lots of things off and on with no change, so it must be coming from somewhere else. Can't wait to get the Racer out in the field and have a good feeling about this machine, and that's when I start finding.

Are you sure you dont have a bad coil ? I had a bad coil on mine because it would overload siren sound unless I turned sensitivity way down. I contacted them and they sent me a new design coil at no charge. It has been working great ever since. If it has the old ear design then most likely it may have issues. Hope you get it figured out before you give up on it.

Power lines and external flood lights seem to be the causes I've noticed with my (original) Racer. Have you tried
the alternate frequencies? Usually the problem goes away for me when I do that. Just going from the
default frequency setting of 3 over to 4 usually is all it takes, although sometimes I have to try several to get
the least interference. Once in a while the interference is so strong that nothing works to make it go away. Not often.

Well now, I'll have to check the coil away from my home. If it is the old style, how are the ears different? In heavy EMI, do other Racer owners experience solid overload with sensitivity above 70-76? Mine does even with coil in air. I have not tried other frequencies reaching my overload sensitivity, but did try to quiet things down at 60, with minor change. Plus the manual says frequency change can drop performance. Wonder why?

Mine overloaded in the air and also on the ground. The only way mine would settle down is turn sensitivity down to 50 range. Take a look at the pic and see which coil you have.Notice around the coil cable is different. Detector Electronics Corp is who to contact about it for replacement.

bayourebel2, thanks for the coil photos. Mine is the older design and air overloads. I will call Detector Electronics Corp. Most likely you've saved me from lots of frustration! I just tested the smaller and larger coils, both with thicker ears and neither air overloads, even at max sensitivity! Plus both seem quieter. Thanks again and I'm surprised after researching the Racer, the older bad coils never came up!

Called Detector Electronics Corp. today and explained what was going on with my older style coil. Right away they issued an RA and will send me a new model coil! That's great service! Now I get to look forward to the new coil and Racer again! In the mean time I can experiment with the small and large coils. Amazingly the small coil hit my clad test quarter down at 12-13inches... barely and without a number lock, but with a beep in 2 tone! In all metal it hits even better with an occasional TID- this near max sensitivity. Too much junk in my yard for any real testing of big coil, but that coil may work well at bigger beaches?

Again I'm so glad for the help here as I would have gone along on my merry way with the Racer and the noisy stock coil, never realizing there was a problem... because I believed the Racer was just a noisy detector and what to expect from it!

You will be impressed with what the racer can do with the newer coil. I tend to like it more than my Deus for coin hunting everytime I use it. Good luck

The 2 plastic ears look quite a lot thicker / stronger on the new coil , i could not imagine that the new ears will break any where as easily as the old design. My racer has the new coil.

"could not imagine that the new ears will break any where as easily" get realistic there Doc,

they're not going to break at all, ever......unless you hit them with a hammer....
