I have never owned an Explorer so I have decided to try one since my detector buddy has been using one for years and finds more silver coins and jewelry than I do. So I made a trade with a local detectorist for his Explorer SE with 10" Slimline and 8" FBS Coils. So far I am very impressed with this detector. It will take me a while to learn all the potential of the SE. Already I am digging deeper coins. On a volleyball court I dug a dime at 10 inches next to iron that we have passed over many times. So my next move will be to obtain the 11" Explorer Pro Coil or an 12"x10" SEF Coil. Any feedback on which of these coils to get will be welcome. Any chance i could trade my stock 10" plus 8" coils even for either the Pro of SEF coils?

EITHER the pro coil or the SEF coil will turn that SE into an absolute weapon.

I would hang on to the 8" coil and just buy either of the two mentioned coils.

10 x 12 SEF coil is the one I would personally choose...but that's just my own opinion as it does better in iron for me.

You WILL find stuff with that 8" coil that the stock sized coils miss...and you can bank on that:beers:

On a side note...if that is the small minelab you are referring to as the 8"...it's actually a 7.5" coil....and it's a good one.

Enjoy your new detector no matter what coil you choose.

Oh...and WELCOME to the forum

You got a good machine! Congrats!

Most folks feel that the Slimline coil is not one of the better ones Minelab produced, so they are not "in demand" in the used equipment market. You might be able to sell it and get a little for it -- say $30 or $40, but replacing it with the 11" Pro coil or the 12x10 SEF would be a nice improvement. Meanwhile, the smaller coil you have is, as I understand it (and as Bryce said) a good one.

Bottom line -- you are having good success, so for now, you might just stick with what you have and learn the machine. It's a good one! CONGRATS!

When I owned my SE, I found that I got better stability and depth with the SEF coils.

The SEF 10X12 is a coin killer ... my other Explorer coils are the stock 11", and the Sunray X-5 & X-8 coils. Never leave home without them .. :detecting:

Thanks guys. I think I will look for a 12" x 10" SEF for starters. It will be a little while before I can shell out the cash though.

Try Richard on the Detector Accessories for Sale board. He had a 12x10 SEF for sale.

You will love your new detector!

Congrats on the purchase. To be officially inducted into the Explorer Gang you must go out and find a white's user and beat them relentlessly (by finding deep silver they walk over!) :stretcher: :clapping: JJ

I am working on doing this with my buddy who has an ACE 250. I have been trying to get him to buy a Minelab for two years now. He still keeps finding lots of clad with the ACE but also complains that here are not silver coins left. The reason I bought the explorer is that my other buddy that has an Explorer II has been consistent in finding silver dimes where my ACE 250 buddy says there aren't any left. My buddy with the Explorer has also found three silver rings from the same park in the last week as well.

Even though you are finding stuff with the slimline get the SEF and you will be shocked at how much more stable it is!

I am loving this detector:) I think I will take the advice of some and get the SEF 12x10 and also ML Pro Coil. Was hunting an older school yard this evening and was digging clad quarters at 9 inches. Must have been some backfill at some point or they just sunk that deep over time. I need to find some old silver territory.
