How many use the 10x5 Joey coil on the Etrac?
How does it feel compared to the stock coil?
About the same depth?
Feel free to give information.

Great in trash, rivals stock coil for depth, easy to pinpoint with. With the Joey you will not only be able to get into tighter spots but much better target separation in very trashy locations. It's much lighter than the stock coil.

So it replaces the stock coil and only loses 1" in coverage.

Yes it it more sensitive to smaller objects. I've dug buckshot at 6 inches with the Joey. Pulled coins that were mixed with nails and foil. The separation is very good. One thing tho it is not water proof like other coils. But don't let that deter you. Most people silicon the plug going in to the coil with no problems. I've had mine for over a year now no problems. I got mine as a bundle from my dealer. If i had to buy a small coil i would get a excel or a Sunray x-5. The reason i say that is I could not afford a Joey at the time. Its your dime any of the three will do the same thing. Good luck on your decision.

I use my Joey when I hunt trashy areas, more often than my X-5. Because I get great target separation, and a larger footprint. Note that I still use the X-5 when it is a REALY saturated lot.

The Joey also excels in the field where you have items to dodge around while looking, i.e., a forest, or planted field. It performs quite well in those conditions. Easier to slide in and out of areas between plants. Of course, be mindful of the DD formation because you want to put the target passing perpendicular to the long side.

My thoughts on the depth loss.....it is minor, but so what? You are ALWAYS going to have targets deeper than your coil can reach, and though we all look at an "average" of X years equals Y depth for a given target, it is not always so. I have found coins from the early 1800's at 3 inches, and conversely, I have found 25 year old coins at depth. For my thoughts, I don't select my coil on just how deep, but it is good practice to use different coils, based upon target separation and target types. I use a WOT, 15x12 SEF, 8x6 SEF, X-5, 8 inch minelab, and a stock coil, as well as my Joey.

If you are thinking on getting one, by all means get it. You will most definitely be using it at times, and being able to snake it around in close quarters is great.

It is NOT touted as being water proof, and so , be aware of that. And, it has a coil cover taped on, or at least mine did. So clean that out and replace the tan coil cover tape with some electrical tape. Mine is Yellow tape. No reason, but it does look different now. I thought of putting some silicone caulk to seal it, but what if I miss a spot. I have plenty of other coils that are water proof, so I just hunt up to damp and wet grass, but I don't submerge it in water.

The only other thing I would say, is that on ALL of my coils I sprung for an extra lower stem, so I don't have to change the nut and bolt out. In the field, it is a quick changeout for me. And they fit nicely in a backpack if in the woods. Except for the 15x12 SEF It does not, but I still have it pre-attached to a lower stem.

Would like to disagree with allot hear, I personally dont like this coil and for other small coils my opinion similar, best coil is original and you can do most things with it. Make small experiment with iron items and different targets like coins and etc... you will see what I mean.

With regard to smaller coils versus the stock coil I have had places the smaller coil worked better. I have a few parks that I covered the exact same trashy area with the stock coil and then the X-5. The stock coil yielded nothing, the X-5 produced some finds. At a mineral springs site my stock coil was just struggling in all sorts of settings and producing very little. The same day, same area the X-5 hit an old merc that was underneath a AA battery and about an inch from a nail at the same level. The VID was all over because of the heavy minerals but I could hear some silver in the tones and dug it. Now the bulk of my trash problems in parks is often aluminum with a little iron. Don't know if that makes a difference or not.

As for the Joey it's a coil I've been interested in, especially for hunting in the woods and brush!

How Deep can you get with the smaller coils in Good and Bad Ground ???

The good thing about smaller DD coils is that they don't lose a lot of depth like a smaller concentric coil does. I can only vouch for the 6X8 SEF (on the E-Trac) and say it gets around 1" - 2" less depth or so in my ground. So, those 9" coins in my iron mineralized dirt that the stock pick up I can hear at maybe 8". The 6X8 isn't really a small coil though, sort of in between but I don't really enjoy using a 5" coil and don't have one - though had one on the V3i and did like it, but SLOW going. I remember cross checking a 9" deep small silver ring that came in ok with the stock and no chance would I have been able to dig it with the 6X8.

In bad ground I believe the smaller coils are better as there is less area to pick up the bad ground. In a way you can compare bad ground to trashy ground. With the stock coil in trashy ground you just hear to much and in iron mineralized ground it's a bit similar, depending on the severity.

Regarding sensitivity, I can run my 6X8 at 30 with no problems where as the stock coil falses a bit more, but still usable.

Just my opinions in my ground though, that last part is key.
