Job / Career - Metal Detecting

Magicman

Member
Anyone know someone that is making detecting a career? (in the field) Thought about placing an ad in the newspaper offering to look for lost items.

I retired from the Army and need something to do. I am enjoying detecting and I also like fishing. However the fishing eats up money with no returns, not like detecting.

Got any idea?

Thanks,
Rich

I would think if you lived near a well used swimming beach one might find enough Jewelry to make a buck or two hunting on the beach and in the water..Basically with clad or even old silver you could make more working at Mickey D's flipping burgers..Main thing would be to find an outlet for the jewelry to make a nice profit as if you sold for scrap gold return is not good even with gold prices sky high as dealer has to make a profit also..Basically a fun and exercise hobby and don't quit your day job probably is applicable as detectors and batteries along with gas money are all expensive...

It would be a fun way to make a living, but realistically its not going to happen and I agree with Dan. Some finds are worth a lot of money, but you would have to make those kind of finds nearly everyday to make a living. If you do find a way let us know. Have a good one. HH Dennis in Idaho

Met a guy a while back that told me his neighbor swung a 'tector 40 hours a week...for the Army...at Fort Bragg...lookin' for unexploded ordnance/rounds so they could convert a huge field to some sort of exercise/play area. Probably not long term.

I was in the Army for 24 years and I took care of a couple EOD units.

What about people that help out police departments?

WHERE I LIVE IN FLORIDA,PEOPLE TEACH ADULT CLASSES IN EVERY HOBBY THAT YOU CAN THINK OF.YOU COULD ALSO TAKE A GROUP OF INTERESTED PEOPLE OUT IN THE FIELD .EITHER INDIVIDUAL OR GROUP LESSONS JUST LIKE GOLF. JUST A THOUGHT,GOOD LUCK

That's why I took up MDing. A fishing trips take up a lot of time. Cops usually have a MD hanging around. As a tradesman, I might approach the homeowner and ask how old the house is and suggest there might be something ineresting in the ground. Most of the time, I get an invitation and even told to come by anytime. Am in process of arranging a 'test' search. The owner is a pretty smart guy and he agreed to allow a search but he wants 50%. He said on of his grandkids found a few old 1700 coins near the surface so the deal is worth it. In a city area, there will be homes of the same age on a street. If you get permission and find and present something honorable to the owner, you'll get the neighbors too. Sometimes you might find an old bottle dump in an area the gardner used to throw his rubbish. If you find bottles, present to the owner, many times when given a choice, they'll take the larger. Lots of times, its the smalle botles that have more worth. Always keep the bottle caps and pull tabs, this proves you're doing something beneficial. mike

HI:
I sent you an PM.
I indicated in it how I justify my MDing.
I don't know that you will make money doing
it my way unless you can get some of your
things published. Read my PM and you'll see what I mean.
