Jim what did you mean when you said that you can buy them at radio shack for a couple of dollars. You lost me. I was looking at the Sunray adapter and on the side where you plug in the 1/4 inch plug the outer nut and bolt is rusty. Maybe it did get condensation within the adapter I don't know. I guess that I will have to buy another adapter unless I take it apart and look at it. Who knows maybe my husband can fix it. Thanks for yours and everyone elses help. HH Diane

....to reevaluate the hardware you are using in the construction of the adapters. I, too, have a post below regarding the rust on the mounting hardware. Looks like it can't stand up to the saltwater atmosphere where a lot of us are using them. I rechecked the nonbrass hardware on my Explorer, and everything is pristine despite the beach use.

I meant you could get a replacement 1/4 inch jack at radio shack.. if its just the nut you could probably get it a home depot, but dont think a rusty nut would cause a problem with a bad connection

I don't want to appear stupid Jim but are you saying that I could replace the 1/4 inch jack on the adapter. That would mean that I should take the back off of the adapter and check the jack and go to Radio Shack and get a new one and then put that into the adapter and then reseal the back? Is that what you mean? Thanks, Diane

yup exactly, I wouldnt do it unless you have someone good with a soldering iron though.. and if its just the nut thats rusted doubt it would help... if it works fine with the original phones plugged into the explorer, then its in the stand or your headphones themself

I can just about promise you, you will go through 10 sets of Headphones before you have a problem with the Sunray adapter stand! I absolutely would not take it apart until you have eliminated the Explorer jack and the headphone cord first! Try the 1/8" jack on the explorer with the factory headphones. If it doesn't work, find another pair with an 1/8" jack to try and make sure. If that works then try a working pair with a 1/4" jack into the stand or buy a "brand new" 1/8" to 1/4" adapter and try the working headphones in the sunray stand. If you are already using a plug in 1/8"-1/4" adapter, they do go bad also!
If all else fails, take your detector into Radio Shack with you and tell them you want to hear what different Headphones sound like. Then try a new pair of 1/8" jack headphones and then a pair of 1/4" jack headphones through the Sunray stand. I will bet money that it is not the stand that is the problem, my bet is it is the headphones.
I only took mine apart because I dropped it very hard!
As far as the washer and nut being rusty, that is just cosmetic! The jack on the inside is plastic! Go to the hardware store and buy a stainless washer and nut if it bothers you it being rusty.

....washer is more than a cosmetic item. It provides strain relieve for the side of the housing. If the washer rusts to the point it cannot provide the relief, the housing can crack as a result of the repeated insertions/extractions of the headphone jack.

No, just kidding, it is sealed in plastic. With a jack plugged in all the time, it is not going to let much in I would think, but salt might be a different story. The washer is not going to rust away to nothing that quick! I wish they would, I dig too many now!
Are your threads rusting also? Or is it just the nut and washer? Mine is shiney new looking, I have had it since July, I used homemade ones before that. I have had mine in rain, but never a salt water beach. Maybe yours is an older one than mine and he is now using stainless nut and washer? I don't know though.
Just cut the bottom out and replace it with what ever you want. If it was more than a $20 item I could understand your concern. I am quite happy with mine. Sure the hell beats the alternative! And it sure has lasted me longer than most things that cost $20!

Hi Ric,
True, it will be awhile before the washer rusts away. Depending on the style of jack, there may or may not be another on the other side of the housing that I can't see. I don't see any evidence of rust elswhere, but that white stuff is beginning to look like a heavy buildup of some sort of oxide. However, I agree, I wouldn't be without the Sunray adapter. It's worth the price just to keep your detector upright when laying it on the ground, thus eliminating the stock coil bracket from Minelab that was prone to catching weeds and everything else if you hunted in natural fields and woods.
