I've posted this a number of years ago on another forum but I think it bears repeating, especially when the procedure worked for me again the other day.
I found a gold religious medallion without the chain. A sweep with my Propointer in the hole didn't net any additional results, neither did another sweep with the detector.
So I set my Deus to All metal PP mode and did a scan of the hole. Sure enough, off to the side I got a target signal. I dug and retrieved the broken 18" 14k chain that went with the medallion.
I have performed this procedure with good results a couple times and thought I would share it with others in the group that aren't already doing it.
Thin chains are difficult to find on their own unless the disc is set very low. I won't normally hunt them because of all the foil signals I would be digging....its a trade off.
But when the probability is high that a chain is in the immediate area (especially gold), its worth taking the extra step to see if I can find it.
