James in west texas

Rockbottom

New member
James - New to the forum and would like to know what part of West Texas your in. Maybe we could get together. Looking for a gold detecter also.

Hi Rockbottom and welcome. I live in the Big Bend area of Texas. Where are you? It would be great to have a detecting partner sometimes although there are no very good nugget patches nearby. I have some detectors I hardly ever use. Study this forum especially posts by Steve and others to get good ideas about equipment, etc.

Alpine. Thanks for the welcome.

I've already found every piece of fence wire and spent bullits in a 50 mile radius, so maybe anything left should be dug.

I'm closer to Terlingua but have probably done most of my detecting in Alpine. I have found gold in Alpine and silver so don't give up. Hard to find a good spot with permission to go. Let's meet up sometime.

Was hoping you were close. Sounds good, let's meet. When do you go to Alpine? I heard they were finding some gold and 2 weeks ago they found copper in the silver mine.
Thought more gold opportunities would be down your way (I'm a rookie).

I'm usually in Alpine a couple of times a month to do shopping, etc. and a little detecting if there happens to be enough time. I'm needing to go to Alpine soon. I go the other way a lot lately, to Presidio and Ojinaga Mexico, a longer, slower trip but much more interesting and scenic up the Rio Grande. Some of the oldest settlements, native American and european in N america. Many potential areas to detect. Mostly private or state owned land. 45 miles to the east of me at Shafter [very historic ghost town] they expect to take 3 million oz silver a year and a little gold. I did not know about the copper. I just hope they don't make too big a mess and pollute too much groundwater. This is the southeast side of the Chinati Mtns State Park land. And yes I've heard of minor gold deposits in the Big Bend. Mercury, historically was the big producer but this area has a very diverse geology, history and ecology on both sides of the river.

James, please let me know when you head North. I desperately am in need of a real detector if you can part with one. I understand it takes a while to figure one out but I've found a few areas with alot of quartz on top of the ground that I would like to check out before dropping big bucks. I know a few ranchers so maybe we could find some good areas you haven't cleaned out. Sounds like you have put in a lot of ground work in the area. I would like to here some of your stories.

tried to PM you. I'll be in Alpine tomorrow [Friday]. Let's say Mcdonalds at noon. I'll wear a black cap with a green design. I'm about 60. Let me know if another time and place would be better. I may bring the Gold Bug 2 as I am thinking of selling it so I can buy some other accessories although I have some doubts about that one being the best one for you.
