couple of questions.
No-1 What do you set all the knobs on your 1270 for for maximum depth. I use my only for relic hunting and any coins I find are incidental to MDing.
No-2 Have you ever read any Gordon Macquarie?...d2

d2,

When I'm jewelery hunting I use the iron disc setting it as low as I can tolerate. Never above 6 and sometimes as low as 4 (typical small nails disc out about 5 1/2 in Iron Disc). For most land hunting where there is little iron I will run Iron Disc around 6 to 8, again dependiong on the amount of iron signals I can tolerate at the site. Sensitivity has to be varied also. For max depth in heavy iron run it low (3 or below) this lets you pick out the good hits better and has little effect on depth. Also, keep the volume low in heavy iron so your ears don't get overloaded by blasts from shallow signals. In the open with little iron run the sensitivity up as high as you can, even to the point where you start to get some background chatter. Then listen for the low soft murmurs of the deeper targets.

But those that master the 1270 and its predecessor the 1266 dig them deep...Would advise good headphones and a lots of practice as after a while you can pick out the good from the bad...I do know those that have mastered the 1266 over the years would surely not part with the unit...

I dig stuff (bullets) up to 10-11 inches deep but one of my buddies with one of them green machines can come behind me and find stuff that I cant hear. I have been running my sensitivity all the way up till I get the back ground chatter and everything else off. I was wondering if there was some way I could get some more depth out of it. Thanks...d2

The one thing that hampers the 1270 is the fixed ground balance in disc. You can overcome some of that by running the iron disc way lower than normal. just ignore the louder signals from shallow iron and listen for the soft murmurs like I mentioned above. Do that and see if those green machines see the small stuff (like percussion caps ect) and lead at the depths the 1270 will. :)

Sorry to say I have not read any of his books. I carried a 22 or shotgun around in the woods as soon as I was big enough (allowed to) and enjoy upland hunting for grouse and of course deer hunting. Haven't done much in the last few years tho since I lost my Gordon Setter.

A CZ as it has an audio boost to allow me to hear deepies quite well..Again deepies will sound round, not cover much area and have a soft signal and you may not be hearing them. Most green machines are not deepies but their top model has a all metal that ID's that goes quite deep..Me thinks your buddy has mastered his unit which tells the tale everytime...
