helping me out when the inevitable questions come. I've been detecting for quite a while, but I've never swung a Explorer before, so I know it will be interesting!
Thanks,

The Explorer XS is a great detector and not at all hard to get use to. The cold days of winter and something to talk about can make it seem like how you set it up is a big deal and must be just right. That is not correct as it has great depth and discrimination if all you do is use the presets and follow the Users Manual.
However, there are a lot of users that will be glad to help on this and the other forums.

Join the crowd...nice bunch of fellows to help, some high tech, some the K.I.S.S.crowd and some in between and have to agree with Cody only as easy or hard as you want it to be.If you could find a local experienced hunter it would help..As far as used XS units once you use for a while willl find out the are not ( Exploders ) as some would like us to believe.

I have an Explorer XS and they are great detectors. The price on used XS's are a real bargin and you have on of the best all round detectors around.
The best advice I can offer you is to get the book Mastering the Minelab Explorer XS & S, written by Andy Sabisch. It is a great book that will you understand the Explorer, I have read the book at least five times and learn something everytime I read it. Read the owners manual and follow the instructions of Andy's book to the letter and the Explorer will amaze you on what it can do.
I used Andy's program for hunting jewerly on the beach at a local park and found a real nice gold ring with-in the first 15 minuets. The Explorer ignored all of the trash and hit solid on the ring, Thanks Andy.
Good Luck, and Happy Hunting. TB

learning something new from people who've already figured things out. Every new detector is an adventure, and part of overall fun I get from this hobby....
