I've got a great place to hunt... need some advice...

So I got permission to hunt an 1833 houses yard and I am planning on going out there tomorrow morning and making a day of it. There are about 2 acres of huntable ground and 2 more acres of a field. The landowner says whenever he has had to dig a hole there are big chunks of pottery everywhere.

My problem here is is that he has an invisible dog fence and those always seem to give me problems. Does anyone have any good advice for when they hunt yards with these elextric fences? I always get lots of feedback and have to run the sens down to like 4.

Should I use the 15" WOT or the stock coil to avoid the feedback from the fence? I don't want to lose any depth because this is by far the oldest place I have ever hunted and has some amazing possibilities. There are probably 20 trees that are 150 years old.

Thanks guys,
Brian

I am not sure how those invisible dog fences work but ask the owner if it is a plug into the wall type of fence. If it is, then ask if it can be unplugged while you are there detecting unless his dog is outside constantly. Maybe you can noise cancel it out but I am sure you have already tried that. Have you tried running in Manual? This sometimes will make the detector run better when there is interferrence from power lines. Hope you are able to figure a way around the dog fence and may you find some really old coins and some neat relics also. Good Luck and HH.

I actually always run it in manual. I have tried auto around dog fences and those don't work either. I will probably end up trying to noise cancel every 10 feet, haha.

Their dog is out 24/7 so asking them to turn it off would be asking too much. I am just happy enough to get permission to hunt the site.

I have one of the electric dog fences in my yard, and as long as you have the power turned off on the wire you can hunt as close as you could a regular fence before it interfered with the detector.

If you can't get the owner to turn off the fence. Nothing you can do with settings is going to make much of a difference, except lowering sensitivity. I've hunted around those fences before and generally once you get within 50 feet or so the explorer will go batty. You'll just have to ride the sensitivity, crank it up when you are far, lower it as you get near.

Bigger coils are generally worse than smaller: they are just a bigger antenae. Hopefully you can get the owner to turn it off for you for awhile.

is the ticket here. Like Chris said, the bigger coils make the matter even worse in this situation, they are simply a bigger antenna and just add to the problem.
I had a invisible dog fence in Florida, the only way I could hunt withing 60-75' of it was with the 8" coil but depth wasn't a problem, STABILITY is what comes first and easier obtained with a small coil. I still managed to get 8-10" deep silver with it.
I always start out on a new site with a smaller coil to clean up the site per se, then go up in coil size for anything deeper.
To many folks get hung up on trying to get MAX DEPTH when in fact there will be times when a small coil will SMOKE a larger one in overall performance, depending on the site of course :)
Just my 2 cents worth.
Good luck & Good Hunting
Mike

These devices run at different frequencies and as you have tried various methods that don't work. I would try to find out exactly where the perimeter of the fence runs and stay as far away as I can..
Seems like the area is large and even hunting a small portion of it is better than nothing..Usually these devices play havoc with any unit
and hunting some area although a small portion is better than none...

I went to that house today and hunted for about an hour. Sadly, all of the huntable area is within the dog fence. Probably 2 acres are within the fence and everything outside of it becomes the neigbors yard. I was using the stock coil and couldn't get very deep at all because the sens was running around 5 and still going wacky. I still did manage a wheat penny, but it was only 3" deep. I will have to speak with the owner sometime and see if I could turn off the fence the next time I am there. Nobody was home today when I was out there hunting.

Go to the PI classroom forum on this site. Ask Mr. Bill, he has a great deal of experience working with detectors and problems like this.
