I've been getting interested in shallow water and

gear box

New member
beach hunting. I have never done this before but i've metal detected for year's. I currently have a new GT and an XLT that is a little over a year old. I would want a machine made specifically for water so if it got wet it wouldn't hurt anything. I don't want to spend over about $600. What do you think of a refurbished cobra beach magnet or a Viper trident? I would consider trading my XLT for a machine of equal value and condition. Thanks for your help. Gary

Any VLF detector will work. I waterproofed an Ace 250 and it's submersible. You can buy some high dollar machines but you don't need to for fresh water. You can buy a Detector Pro Pirate new for $299. Don't forget you'll need a long handled scoop.

I always thought that was the kewlest mod, how's it holding up? I've used my ACE250 in the shallows around Bermuda and it works well if you run in all metal with low sensitivity (3 bars). I haven't gone to the lengths you have to protect the housing, I just duct tape a ziplock baggy around it.

BDA,
It works great. My favorite beaches were flooded out all last Summer. I only took it out a few times last year. But the year before I would say I had it in or under the water about 50 to 75 hours. Never leaked. I can set the sens as high as I want and only notch out iron. What I should have done was installed the 9x12 coil on it.

Thank's guy's. I think I will lean toward's the tiger shark for now. I have an old silver sabre that still work's good so I know Tesoro makes a good detector. It's frozen here in Minnesota so I don't have to be in a hurry. I was reading past post's and it look's like the detector pro had some problem's. Quite a few people said their's stopped working. Thank's again and Merry Christmas!!!

Very Kewl Khouse,
I take it you're running the ACE250 in freshwater as I couldn't get the sensitivity above 4 bars in the ocean without it falsing. It's amazing what the Yeller Feller can do even though it wasn't designed to do it. It's like the R2D2 of detectors.:bouncy:

Cheers and Merry Christmas,

BDA

Yes, Freshwater beaches only. There must be 6 different waterproof conversions out there. I also put a waterproof pinpoint button on mine.

Be glad you didn't put the 9 x 12 on. I did and it's pretty unruly and I keep stepping on it in the water!! I'll be putting the stock coil on sometime soon so I'll be ready for next season.

The stock coil worked great for me in the salt water. I'm thinking of taking the old Yeller Feller out for a spin today as a matter of fact. It's not one of my big guns but it sure is a whole lot of fun and you can swing it all day if you want without ever getting tired.

Kewl,

Alright then. Looks like I did the right thing without knowing it. I love the water and the scenery that goes with it! I just make sure I wear my reflective sunglasses!

OK fellows, I'm just curious, i thought you couldn't use an ace 250 in water as it would get a false signals??
or is this just for the beach?? or not fresh water?? please let me know as i have a ace 250 with a larger coil
as well as a stock one, it works well on beach..so can i use it along the shore line??

When you work the fresh water it is as stable as hunting the ground. Only the wet salt sand would give it some fits. Dry salt sand would be no problem. Wet salt sand you would have to reduce your sensitivity and possibly raise your disc some too.

Can I ask where you found a waterproof converwion for your ace 250. I looked all over the net and counldn't find a thing. What I use now is ok but not great, I took a kids small clear plastic heavy purse and incased my 250. It will keep spashes and rain out but no way would it last if by accident it went under.

I used a commercial food container.

I thought that was what it looked like but wasn't sure. One question, how did you waterproof the 4 holes you had to drill. Two to attach controller to handle and the 2 jacks. I would think you had to drill the hole for the coil jack about twice as big as the cord, that would leave a big hole to plug up. And what sealer would stick to hard plastic so thru time the sealer would not work its way lose from the container.
