It's Time...

Better pop on down to the "Yank-Aussie Prospecting" forum just a few clicks down. Theres a nice fresh post about "what is the best metal detector for gold prospecting".. which sounds like the advice you need from guys that do this all the time...good luck, and let us know how it goes!

Hi Mud~

As you suggested I went to the "Yank-Aussie Prospecting" forum and read the articles related to my question. In one of the posts there was a link to an Alaska Prospecting site and the site owner had some lengthy reviews on the best gold machines. The one of the best underwater and all-around detector in his opinion was the Garrett AT-Gold. Seems like lots of value for the money. Especially at about half the price of the Excalibur II. Thanks much for the lead. Hope you have a fantastic weekend!!

MIght be too late, but the AT Gold isn't waterproof very deep... Might not be a dive machine...

Good luck! I'd love to go gold prospecting but just don't have the time!

Maybe consider buying two detectors, one for the water and one for land hunting. Many like the MXT for gold nugget hunting and it still is a great (though not as deep as a Excal or Sovereign) coin shooter on land. For water gold hunting I wonder how good the Tesoro water unit is. Not the PI one but the VLF unit. Tesoros are real good on tiny gold jewlery so maybe they'd also be good for gold nuggets? Don't know, I'd ask in that forum. I used to own that water unit (the non-PI one) and liked how it was built and how you swapped batteries. Very nice unit. Only drawback is no visual or tone ID for land hunting coins and such.

Then again the AT Gold might be a great choice if you aren't diving too deep. Not sure how deep the Tesoro will go.

I just know that you can pretty much count out the Excal or Sovereign as a nugget shooter. They just don't have the sensitivity to small gold targets that other machines have. Now if you were after gold rings or old coins there isn't anything deeper than an Excal or Sovereign. They hit great on gold rings/coins and have good audio harmonics for hunting them.

Thanks for the input. I imagine that the "normal" scenario would be gold pickers and not large nuggets (even though this is what we seek) so that would exclude the Excalibur, thanks Critterhunter.

I realize that 10' depth is not much but in the creeks and streams around here I believe that it would be sufficient as an entry prospecting model. I am a couple of hours from the ocean and will not be diving any deep lakes. I guess that I can start with the AT-Gold and if my research pays off then I could look at much more expensive waterproof prospecting models.

As with any design engineering there is always the +/- factor that is usually a percentage of the stated value or range. While Garrett states that it is safe to 10' they probably tested it to a depth that is 25% to 50% greater as a safety margin. Knowing full well that "boys" will always push the set limits. :yikes:

Best Regards,
